I love Veal however my misses doesn't allow it in the house, apparently it’s cruel. I believe Rose Veal is kinder than White Veal.

So what does PH's think Cruel or not?

Absolutely.

Most male calves are euthanised at birth. Eating more veal will mean that these calves will have a few months of good life instead of the alternative.

ETA - it's also effing delicious.

I did quite a bit of research into it and came to the conclusion from an ethical point of view I'd rather eat British veal than pork or chicken. At least you are eating something that would otherwise go to waste and possibly long term you might help reduce the reliance on intensively farmed poultry etc.

Veal is yummy, my other half makes involtini, rolls of veal stuffed with pine nuts, breadcrumbs, sultanas etc then fried on a skewer, bloody delicious.
Also does a cutlet bashed out and Bain-maried with just a splash of olive oil, served with a lump of bread, awesome!

I think the 'cruel' image comes from the practice of crating the calves. Veal raised in the UK cannot be crated and the husbandry standards are, as have already been mentioned, higher than for a lot of other meat/poultry production. As a consequence of the reluctance to eat veal, male calves are euthanised. Is that any less cruel?

As long as it isn't crated, it is no different from eating lamb.

Agreed, British rose veal is enjoying a real resurgence at the moment and is no more cruel than any other meat production and in some respects less cruel. The old image of veal is all about how it used to be produced on the continent
