In a way, I'm glad to see the straight-six back in the M3.

With three turbos bolted on ?

I expected one turbo, maybe even two ... but three

I don't believe it will have 3 turbos. That rumour seems to have orginated from Auto Express, they have seen something about an electric turbo, put 2 & 2 together and come up with 3.

My bet will be 2 turbos, and one will be an e-turbo, a turbo with a small electric motor inside it to improve response and reduce lag.

Well, lets wait and see eh? BMW usually do innovations well. If they can make it rev to 7500rpm, well, now that would be something wouldn't it?

So where will this leave the 1M on terms with it spec wise? Would they not be better decreasing the engine size on the 1M then making the step back down for the M3!

They would never want the 1M outperforming the M3!

If BMW do go down to the straight six for the new M3 they will be very clever to how much power they give it.
It will slot in nicely between the new M5 and the 1M.

3turbo engines are currently being developed. We are currently involved in such a project with a german OEM, so don't dismiss it yet........

Seems like downsizing and strapping turbos is the only way to go nowadays... Im intrigued as to the high mileage reliability of the high boosting modern engines. Time will tell...

I think there is some formula for how much power they give M cars:

More powerful than the last M3, less powerful than the last M5

They'll make it a solid proposition over the 1M - but perhaps like the CSL as it's a limited run its not really a consideration for the market the M3 is aimed at, certainly by the time the new one is on sale at least.

I wonder how long it'll be before we see another 4-pot M car? I actually find the idea quite appealing in a pervy kinda way.

Ok, potential slice of humble pie for me. What's the advantage of 3? Presumably much the same as the e-turbo, faster response and reduced lag?

I guessing e-turbos are still too new and expensive then? They were still a few years away from being a production reality for us a coule of years ago.

Straight six...with 3 turbo's!? Meh. Make it a high revving N/A engine and then my interest might be tickled.

However, this planned 'M2' looks quite interesting;

If the final product looks anything like the concept.....they could be onto a real looker!
