Who is it who leaves all the Fuel/Oil on the road ?
Discussion
Came of my bike on Monday resulting in being pretty banged up, no broken bones but have been in pain all week now, came off on a roundabout right outside work which I have managed to navigate several hundred times at all times of year in all weathers, I slowed right down as it was wet and I knew it could be a bit sketchy, then, bang front wheel gone and I am on the floor where I noticed the pretty patterns and unmistakeable smell of diesel. Whilst getting myself together I noticed a few cars spinning their wheels whilst accelerating suggesting that it was pretty slippy.
This morning ont he way to work I noticed a fuel (assuming diesel) splodge every few metres, regular as clockwork for miles, what causes that, a leaky tank, overfilled ?
Now I expect some will say its part of driving, be more careful, but I was, I couldnt have really been more careful and I wasnt badly injured but was a pretty dangerous situation and it made me realise how dangerous and how many accidents this may be causing, anyone else had any issues with fuel spills ?

I get this near me too; splodges of diesel along the road, and a roundabout suffering from a fair coverage of it. The road is a major route for trucks, there's a petrol station nearby, plus agricultural vehicles using the roads a lot. I think its a combination of those factors.
The roundabout has had a lot of accidents in the time I've lived here; its well sighted and well signposted, so I can only assume its partially to do with the slipperiness (certainly noticeable some days when I cycle round it, and I nearly lost it in the car once).

There's a fuel depot just off the road to my work, I've actually had fuel splashed on my screen from a tanker going the other way that's just left the depot before. The roundabouts nearby are also pretty lethal on occasions, I had a massive moment once in my old Focus with very little provocation in the damp, and I've seen many cars in the ditch on the exit.
I probably should have reported it, but it hasn't been as bad recently so presumably someone's had a word with them.

My neighbour is always leaving oil and stuff on the road outside, even though he could easily park his car on the drive (he has a three car drive but never uses it, when we have a 1 car drive with 3 cars in the house althogether) and he just doesnt seem to understand the problems with it.
Sympathies to the OP. I have come off bikes twice thanks to diesel spills, sometimes you can see it, more often you can't. IIRC MCN ran a campaign some time ago with lots of pictures of buses and trucks spewing diesel out of overfilled tanks.
I think I'm right in saying that plod can and will prosecute operators of vehicles seen sloshing derv all over the road.

Not far from my house these is a T junction onto a main road. Every 15minues a bus comes along the road to pull onto the main road. They have the give the buses some welly to get them onto the main road. When pulling out at this T junction no matter how steady you are with your clutch the inside right always spins up. I sit watching cars infront of me stuggle to get out especially if they try and nip out infront of a car. The harder you try the more you sit there spinning your wheels like a plonker. I can only assume this is due to buses leaking diesel in some way? Anybody heard anything similar?
i saw a long spill probably a few miles long near epping a few weekends ago turned out to be a lorry with a punctured fuel tank apparently this is quite common as is overfilling.
I have come off due to diesel at circa 20mph, certainly not fun and almost certainly an unavoidable accident on a bike once the tyre comes into contact with diesel on a bend.
Luckily when i crashed it was on a supermoto so only a bent footpeg and slighty graze on the mudguard and mirror.

Trucks with overloaded diesel tanks mostly
This. Also when it rains this releases the oils to the surface after a dry spell as the tarmac surface is usually designed to absorb and drain water away so you don't get puddles.
I few years ago I had a very scary moment on diesel, luckily a car had been coming round the roundabout I was approaching otherwise I'd have been going a fair bit faster.
I ended up leaving the roundabout at the correct exit, only issue was I was traveling backwards, just hit the throttle at what can have only been 15mph.
Stopped a few hundred yards up the road expecting a major suspension failure, guy behind be pulled in (at the time I expect to have a go) and explained that his traction control flashing up on the roundabout, looking at my tyres they were wet with diesel. Phone the non emergency police number to let them know.

Steam engine. It's show time and the old beasts are trundling about at the crack of dawn dropping oil everywhere. I'm quite serious, I proceeded 8 miles out of my house on my bike on the way to work and every 3m was a rainbow slick in the centre of the carriageway. I had to ride to the side of the road to avoid it and was wondering how something could be dropping so much then I caught up with the engine and witnessed it laying it's trail.?
