So i fitted the replacement engine last week, set the timing and it fired up and ran well after the oil got round the system. Revving freely and smoothly.

For no apparent reason it wouldnt restart, trying a little with a few coughs and splutters but stinking of petrol and flooding the plugs.

I had the Torqueflow AFM retuned for my previous engine that was very weak and had to be richened up quite a bit. So i assumed a standard AFM might sort it out.
Fitted a borrowed one (Thanks Kenny) and its the same.

So maybe i have a basic fault.....
checklist please.

I also have a 5.0 ECU so will try that first

I've had this in the past, generally a flooded engine.

Once flooded they are a b*stard to restart!

Once after starting the car a couple of times to shift some vehicles around, (therefore not warming the engine) I had to tow start it, and a long tow it was! Once started, lots of coughs and splutters, it was absolutely fine!

If you think it is flooded then take the fuel pump relay out and start the car. It will probably start, run for a second then stall. This empties the combustion chambers. Then reconnect the relay (remember to turn ignition off after stalling, ahem), and off you go. Worked for me when I stalled my Chimaera a few times.

Ok.
I remember it started last week and the timing was way out so i set it and it idled but then the problems started.

Just swung the dizzy and it started for about 30 seconds and died.

I have just swapped the dizzy for my old one and its running ok now.

I spent a solid day trying to figure out why mine wouldn't star once, turn out the coil wasn't earthed

I cram 44 hours in from Mon to Thurs. I got in at 9:30 last night.
The OT has been cut so i will be home a little earlier next week but its another hit on my finance i dont need.

The car is still going to Dales on Sunday.... sod the expense!
Off to the PO now to try and get some road tax without a V5.

Make up a little bogey Peter. Or use a pram.

Yeh, but 12 of those hours are on PH, that's why I work long hours to make up for it wink

Dam, I've done it again, wasted more time!

Still have a problem!

So sometimes it runs fine and others it doesnt want to know.

Some intermittent electrical gremlin.... the worst kind!
Or could an air leak be to blame?

Help.

It can't be the engine, especially as it runs fine sometimes.

Fuel pump
Electrical connections
Dodgy ECU, AFM

It will be something simple.

Keep the faith.

Just had a series of probs with B. The following were the culprits: end of last week, condenser, then rotor arm, both replaced and she has run fine all week until today, bloody roadside breakdown this morning on the way to see the GF. Cut a long story short, the points plate had moved and closed the points up. Initial symptons were run out of fuel or fuel blockage.... Reset the points and she was up and running again...

ETA: The distributor was brand new 300 miles ago.... trust nothing, suspect anything wink

Have you connected the fault code reader ? If it's intermittent, it may catch it.

If it was running all ok with the old engine, it is unlikly to be the bolt ons.

Does it fire at all?

If not, but rnns intermittently, I would suspect a poor connection or poor earth to the engine maybe.

Try the connector to the AFM.

I would be tempted to try another ECU and AFM if you can get hold of one.
At worst, take mine next week confused.

I have Kennys (gifdy) spares.
Tried it as was this morning.... just a few splutters
Swapped the AFM..... the same
Swapped the ECU..... the same
Swapped the dizzy.... it fired up and ran good.
Then not so....

The dizzy might just be coincidence.

If you're sure the timing is approx correct, I would floor the throttle with the pump relay out, really turn it over and clear it out.
Then try & start with no throttle.

If that fails, turn it over full throttle, they're funny motors and remain flooded for ages.

Am i pointing the strobe at the wrong marker? About 2 oclock on the timing cover.
With the timing set where i think it should be it doesn't want to restart.
Give it a load of advance and hey presto.

Just to confirm i aint going crazy can someone explain step by step to setting the timing on a serp.

Electrical mate, has to be. Me and Neal ran in circles trying to solve my MS install, even ran an independant loom for injectors as problem was so intermittant. Turned out to be the ignition relay which was partially corroded and occasionally earthing out as we looked around, moved stuff. We were convinced it was something we'd done but turned out to be good 'ole TVR wiring in the end. Check the very basics bloke.
