What makes a car 'special' ?
Discussion
Morning,
Just interested to find out what everyone feels about the 'X' Factor in car? What is it that makes a car special? For me it is cars of rarity with a thoroughbred/focused background that feel special i.e Alfa GTV, Integra Type R (DC2) E30 M3, Escort RS Cosworth... of course one could say that all Ferraris, Lambo's etc.. are special but some how I do not feel they all fall into that category...

Something that insights passion and interest to the person. Usually not being boring is a good start.Just interested to find out what everyone feels about the 'X' Factor in car? A car feels special if the owner considers it such... The car itself doesn't really matter that much. Some will say it has to be this, or that, but those things make a car interesting, but not special. There are people out there with fascinations with the most mundane of vehicles, BUT the owners love them to bits, and feel they are special. That's all there is.
Because something is done to go above and beyond basic transport - whether it's the style, the noise or the way it drives.
I say above and beyond ... sometimes it's to the detriment of its quantifiable usefuleness, but it means someone's put some passion into designing the car, rather than simply stuck to an efficient set of design criteria.

yes, the sound is rather important gives the car the 'soul' and 'passion' <the start to a Alfa advert by the sounds of it ! Whilst we are on the subject you guys may wish to check out this months Evo as there is a feature on the best sounding cars!
So if we were to agree that a car feeling 'special' is down to a person then how many of you actually look for the 'X' factor ? Or do you make a performance car purchase on 0-60, BHP, grip, top speed etc...?

Why does a special car have to be about speed?
It isn't IMHO
Mine's special to me just because it never fails to amaze me. Should've died years ago, but just keeps going strong (got a longlonglong journey tonight and MOT on Monday so should probably touch wood with that

Does he, really?
I've had half a bottle of rather nice Argentinian red wine, but I can't see where he says that, in fact he seems to say quite the opposite in his OP

Was with regards to him saying "So if we were to agree that a car feeling 'special' is down to a person then how many of you actually look for the 'X' factor ? No need to get snippy about it.
There are no metrics. For me a special car is one which I find significantly more enjoyable - for whatever reason - compared to it's predecessors or alternatives.
Of all the cars I've owned, the ones I've considered most special, are the ones I'd widely expect most PHers to consider the most boring. It's not something I think is quantifiable.
