Search function is down,

How do i go about removing my plate from my car prior to sale?

Seems to say here:
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/PersonalisedR...

That they want to inspect the car and it could take 2 weeks!?

When i put the plate on, it took all of 2 mins at the DLVA office to swap over the TAX/MOT...

Remove mine all the time. Simple case of putting it on retention. Shouldn't take 2 weeks, but when the buyer has wanted the car quickly I have completed the paperwork in advance and explained to the buyer that the plates do not form part of the sale (asking him/her to sign a document confirming this). The old plates are usually allocated anyway (which is why I tend to stick my private plates on top of the existing ones)

Who wants to inspect the car - the DVLA?

DVLA tends to inspect cars that don’t have a continuous taxation / SORN / MOT history, essentially its to stop people registering dodgy cars / removing plates where the vehicle has long since gone

its double sided taped on, but thanks for the valuble help!! wink

They havent said they want to inspect it, just it says they might. Only a problem as i put some feelers out price wise on the car and someone said they want to drive it away next week. They would re-register it in france also so i'd imagine the plate would get lost....

They won't inspect.

Pop down the DVLA with the rentention forms and money.

Then wait a week till you get a letter stating plate is on retention and the registration allocated is XYZ (normally the original number but not guaranteed) and a tax disc. Put different plates on and change tax disc.

Wait another week till V5 arrives.

That's how it was when I took mine off anyway.

I've transferred my plates about 15 times now and once the vehicle (Westfield) had to be inspected by the DVLA.

The time to receive the V5 back from the DVLA usually takes between 2 and 4 weeks in my experience.
