What gearbox oil?

What should I be using in my 92 precat, it is the older BL box. TVR manual says Mobil ATF 220, this is showing as an Automatic gearbox fluid, is this correct?

Just need to drain and refill as part of my on going servicing.

Your gearbox will be the Rover box LT77. Rover initially put a thick gear oil in it but customers complained that gear selection was difficult when cold, particularly 2nd. Due to this the decision was made to use atf. This improved the gear selection but being too thin for the box meant that boxes werent lasting that long. Unfortunately this was the thinking when TVR used these boxes hence you being told to use atf. The last and latest thinking is Castrol SMX. This is a synthetic oil for manual boxes and appears to offer the best of both worlds for cold gear selection and protection. I do believe that SMX has been discontinued although there is still some about. There is a new version of it but i am not sure of its exact name. Another good oil apparently designed for this box is Difflock. Just Google Difflock oil for LT77.

I recently did some research on this and some of the Cobra lads are using Mobil 1, 0/40 engine oil with a good dose of gearbox molylube. They have stated that it has transformed there bad mannerred, notchy box to almost perfect, and have been using this formula for years with no bad results. Each to their own but i have just replaced mine with SMX.

Looks like Castrol SMX-S is available at Halfords, so I can pick some up easily, but I'm a bit concerned about the comments in the reviews re Landrover LT77 gearboxes.
