Foxhounds?

Bit of a specialist dog to own I would imagine. Would need a strong leader and LOTS of exercise. As to obtaining one, I guess a kennel would sell you one, but would probably have to know you first.

I would find your local hunt kennel and make contact and go from there if I were you.

They are a lovely looking dog for sure. Mate of mine in Wales posted some pics on facebook of the local pack, which are long haired -very nice....

Would not be my choice for a pet. How experienced are you with dogs?

Definitely not a pet dog. They have very strong pack/ hunt instinct and have not really been bred for the domestic life.

I have known of a foxhound mix who started off lovely but very soon the strong hound (far more than a beagle and they are stubborn dogs aswell) set in, they ended up rehoming him to a farm type environment.

I know of someone who took on a 'stray' foxhound. The owner was very dedicated to this dog but she'd be the first one to agree that the dog was extremely hard work any lesser owner would have given her up. The dog would run off, chase everything, not be trustworthy with others (she was an extreme care at the vets!).

So in general I would say there are far more suitable breeds to have as a pet (that can look similar to foxhounds).

Totally agree with Bex.

Unless you know how to train to a really high level and redirect a natural prey drive/chase instinct, then I would avoid getting any type of dog that is bred to hunt such as foxhounds. There is a reason why you just don't see them available to the pet market.

Some hunts let you adopt/rear a young pup/dog for them so its worth speaking to your local kennels. They take it back to hunt when its of age.

If it's the look of foxhounds your missus likes, you might want to consider a lemon pointer instead; they look like a light-boned, slim-built foxhound (ours gets mistaken for a foxhound all the time), but they are much more suitable as a family pet.
