We've been suffering from a denial of service attack which kicked in late yesterday evening and succeeded in taking the site down until a few minutes ago.
Pete and Matt Dell have been working through the night to fix this and we appear to have a solution in place.
Service may be a bit lumpy, so please be patient (for a bit longer...)
This was simply a DoS attack. No user data has been compromised.

Some spotty virgin read The Register, saw PH getting mentioned and thought he'd get on what appeared to be a relatively easy target. He'll have spent all last night thrapping himself silly at his jolly wheeze. Meanwhile, his "friends" still don't know of his existence and his future wife is, unconventionally, called Fleshlight. His parents would be proud, but they've worked hard all their lives to keep their 43 year old son in Wotsits and Vimto and want to enjoy their retirement. They're secretly hoping his massive arse gets a nice DVT clot and he gets taken off their hands quickly.
