Done it!!
The new rear lights are in and, suprise suprise, they work, well except for the reversing light, I think I may have blown the fuse wherever it may be!
A tip for any one who is going this route, cut the outer cover off using, if possible a Clarkes ' rotary tool system, I bought one and this made the whole thing much easier.
Absolutely no way I could heat up the adhesive and remove the covers as suggested.
Refix the lenses using a mastic, I used Sikoflex and used this to fix the lights to their housings on the car.
All in all I am satisfied with the result altho' the second light was much easier than the first as you learn as you go along.
Anyway, just thought I'd let you know it's done & thanks to all those that gave me advise.
Cheers,
Chris.

Great...now get out and enjoy it! Oh and by the way a couple of piccies of your handywork are obligatory!
Would love to post piccies but being a total dork have absolutely no idea how to do this.
Anyone out there willing to educate a thick 'virgin' on how to do this in words and pictures??

Chris (and anyone else trying to get these covers off),
After cursing and swearing for a week I managed to get the first cover off. Once I perfected my technique, the second one came off in 45 mins ! What was the technique ? I used a Hair dryer! ..
First heat up the corner and gently prize a screw driver in the gap, keep heating it till you can get a wodden spatula in the gap.
You then just push the spatula along the edge of the cover as you heat it. The mastik will give easily once there is some force pushing the cover away from the body of the lens. Obviuosly, if you use too much force ....... It worked for me though.
