I will be looking for a second hand saloon/estate car next year (I like to start researching early).

I discounted a full blown 4X4 as I have access to one if needs must.

My criteria thus far:

1. Petrol engine
2. A decent sized engine
3. All wheel drive
4. Reasonable power and performance
5. A bit of prestige
6. Automatic transmission
7. Less than 10 years old

I have been thinking along the lines of X type Jag either saloon or estate. Audi A6 (do they do an A6 AWD estate)? Volvo (not that one that's a cross between a 4X4 and esate - not too sure about the looks).

Is there anything else that you can recommend or have any experience of the above cars?

And finally the budget isn't final but will be between shall I say £5000 - £9000. It may alter by next year, who knows I may have won the lottery by then!

My father in law just got a Honda legend. No prestige but ticks all the other boxes pretty well. Really nice place to be.

Subaru Legacy is the obvious answer. Or you could forget about an automatic and look at an Impreza or a Lancer Evolution. Heck, the Impreza estate is a great car.

What I was thinking as I was reading the OP's requirements. I considered one of these with the 3.0 H6 engine late last year, but they were thin on the ground and I didn't fancy a 100 mile drive just to have a look. Look up youtube vids and they sound gorgeous with some mild exhaust mods.

X-type 3.0 is fab but not as an automatic - the box is dire.

The manual is a great drive. Cheap enough to run too and very comfy.

I have had a 3.0 spec b for a year and a half now and it's fantastic. Took a while of looking before we found one but worth the wait.

Soon replaced the boxes with a used pair of prodrive ones through the owners forum for £180 and they are great.

Highly recommended.

OP has not said how much money he want's to spend or defined the required performance...

either way, much as I like Legacy's, I don't really think they are up to the same price/performance/finish as something like an A4 Quattro (assuming B7 platform).

depends on which one you look at but:

Legacy Tourer 2.0i ES Nav 5dr - 148Bhp, 9.8 sec to 60, 199g/Km (ie. quite slow and thirsty)

Equivalent would be something like:

A4 Saloon 2.0 TFSI Quattro - 208Bhp, 6.6 sec to 60, 169g/Km (ie. a lot faster and better on fuel)

I don't dislike Subaru's, but I think the Legacy has not kept up in the last 10 years, they are still woefully dull interiors, and drink fuel, theya re also somewhat smaller than the A4's.

Yes, the 3L legacy is faster, but still a lot slower than the equivalent Audi, with even worse running costs.

Yes he did - £5-9k. He'll get much more Legacy for his money than Audi at that price point.

Those two cars aren't equivalents. The Audi costs almost £10k more for a start.
