We are the second owners of a 2007 Honda Jazz taht came with a 3 year warranty from Honda Greece.

It has a main dealer service history and last year I took it for a service 1 moth out of it's 3 month warranty. They tested the battery and their test said it was a bit weak so guess what - instead or riping me off for a new battery they gave me a new one FOC without me even asking..they did try and charge 180euro for a set of brake pads all round which I declined.

Time for annual service again and the car has developed a intermittent misfire. They do the service and tell me the car has 8 coil packs that cost 100euro each! (8 plus you see...). They think that 1 of the 4 on the 'back side' of the engine is gone but can't tell which one so will have to change all 4 at least to see if the problem goes away. Before I can say anything the service manager says he put a claim in Honda Greece to do it FOC but will not have an answer same day and apologises for the inconvenience because I will have to take the car back again. 2 days later I have a positive response from Honda that they will change 4 coil packs.

The service way 170 for what was an oil service but they had special going on (which they called me about 3 months ago) and knocked of 50% on the parts so 136 euro for an oil service + air filter.

I was very surprised at this decent service, especially in Greece. On the sales side Honda here son't give discounts and give crap trade ins but the service is great.
Compare this to VW here - we had a 2008 Eos that only came with a 2 year warranty and needed an oxygen sensor to which VW were not interested in helping out on even after a 400 euro service with them
VWs here are sold with a free 1 year warranty which can be extended to 2 years by paying. With their TSI and DSG issues they really are showing faith in their cars...

A 1 year warranty at VW?!

Good on Honda for providing such good service though. Always nice to read stories of good service rather than the never ending stream of criticism that is more commonly found online.

8 coilpacks? Do they do a 8cylinder Jazz in Greece?

No, it's just a 4 cylinder engine with 8 spark plugs. You get it here in the UK aswell, sold as a i-DSI, and basically if fires the plugs at different points to enable more efficient and complete combustion.

2 per cylinder, thats why its a pricey little bugger to service as the head has to come off I think.

Only the inlet manifold has to come off.
While youre there you end up adjusting the valve clearances - often left causing miss-fires.....

Dunno why you're taking the inlet manifolds off.

With the right range of extension bars it's quite easy to change the back 4 without taking anything off.

I stand corrected. I see why Honda always tops the customer satisfction surveys, very impressed with the treatment the OH gets with hers. Even when left with them recently for some very trivial matter it was returned fully valeted. I'm lucky if my dealer squirts a hosepipe in its general direction after my Ford gets serviced at great expense.

Why would you need 2 coil packs per cylinder? Couldn't you run both plugs from the same one, since they'll presumably be firing simultaneously?

They don't fire simultaneously, they fire at different points in the ignition stroke for a cleaner burn.

Why do Honda need to use 8 coil packs?- Alfa did the same thing with 2 'wet' Bosch coils in the early 90s!

This was the case with VW back in the late 90s for sure. I was based in Cyprus and VW only offered a one year manufacturer's warranty. I remember Toyota offered 3 years worldwide at the time.

My experience of Lexus has been excellent. But one example is when I hit a badger whilst pressing on. The local dealer gave the car a good once over the following morning whhich took over half an hour - all FOC.

Skoda would get my thumbs up as well from experience.

VW on the other hand.....

Yes, it did - 2 distributors.

But you say that like it's a bad thing.

It's a lot cheaper and less complex than modern systems.

If they were better and more importantly cheaper car manufacturers would still be using them.

I agree coilpacks are not perfect, especially owning VWs, but they are still better than the days of replacing rotor arms, distributor caps and HT leads

Never been a problem for me - just something on the service schedule - I've had more problems with coil pack failure than I ever have with distributors. Admittedly, when you had points ignition, they were a PITA, but Bosch L-Jetronic and a pair of distributors is just about as bullet proof and cheap / easy to maintain as you can get.

The normal servicing is like any other car in my experience but ours has only done 30k miles but I think at 60k miles the valve clearance need doing so I think this is the pricey service you may be referring too.

Still less than a cambelt change on a Renault though!!
