Wow a hot golf at last. 60 in 6.5 and 240 bhp, why has it taken them so long? The price is the only stumbling block from what I can see - 24 grand for a golf is a lot of money.

Would you have one over a 325i / Scoob etc

The Golf 4motion was about £23,000 when it first came out in the UK i think , and compared to the RS Beetle this is a snip

If it sounds as good as the RSi Beetle that i followed on Saturday, then that'd do it for me. It's about time we had a decent Golf.

They're still too big and heavy though. Guess it'll be 4x4 too? Unfortunately the haldex (sp?) drivetrain is not brilliant, so we'll have to wait and see.

The RSi Beetle's engine is lovely (I was stood next to one at Goodwood last year as it set off). And the Golf is a very nice object. So it'll be a desirable car. But anyone who thinks of spending £24k on one is inevitably going to look at the competition - RS Focus, Civic Type R, Impreza STI, BMW 330i, Alfa 156 GTA maybe, and realise that the Golf doesn't do anything terribly well. I bet it's a very nice car, one which will be terribly satisfying to own, and I'd even consider it at £20k. But not at £24k.

-jesus, a lot of money for not much acceleration! My mediocre TVR S2 will keep up with this and the best bit is I'll have £19k spare for a bigger engine!

And why has it taken then so long to come up with a Golf that is still 0.1s slower to 60mph than the Corrado VR6 that ceased production 7 years ago?

Guess Ford had the same problem with that Puma Sporting (or whatever) they put together for 24k. You're into another class of car at this price range. 13-16k is a good price for a Puma or Golf, not twice that. EVO/Scoobie trounce the Golf (or Puma) for the same money.

I just read EVOs Bora V6 long term article (or was it AutoCar?). They paid over 26k for it!!! Being a VW it hasn't lost value like other marques, but sh1t, why spend that money on a Bora?!?

for a full review, see the VW site www.vwvortex.com in the states.

I think VW have been sniffing something.

In three years when it retails for £14K, I'll think about it. The only serious competitor in that sector is the Scoob/S3 though - the BMW 325i is underpowered in comparison. I would take a used Beemer over a new golf any day. so a 2 year old 330CI would be my choice.

Blimey now let me think, it has a roof, 4 seats and cost's £24K, for a Vdub . Call me simple but couldn't you get a rather decent Cerbera for that money. OK almost 4 seats, 9 second dash to umm 1/4 mile, sorry like for like 0-60 4 secs then. But then again servicing bills to frighten Bill Gates's wealth.
Seriously though this is a hell of a lot of money for a GTi golf, buy a decent Mk1 if you must have a Golf, it'll probably keep up with it in the real world. Then invest the change in your dreams, be it a EVO, Scooby, or one of Blackpools finest open top versions

Yes you can buy a cebera for £24k, and I think the new golf is sluggish and way over priced.
That said, a cebera is not v.reliable, and the golf is aimed at the mass production, sports touring market.

You're right, will depreciate like buggery though.

24k is alot of dough .. but it looks like a lot of car .. and 3.2 litres is some unit too, plus all the gubbin's u get in it too beats most 40k motors ... there aint gonna be many either so i think residuals will be good too ! .. i'm gonna get my name down for one ! i know that scoobs etc will rip it .. but u can't beat that quality german engineering no matter how quick it goes.
