While looking on the TG website I found these two articles with some more info and pictures on Clarksons CL and Hammonds 850i, so just thought I'd post them on here if any of you are interested.

Which one would you go for?

Clarkson's. Have you seen that interior? I could live in that car!

Merc for me.

Always liked the CLs but never aspired to an 8 series.

Definitely the Merc for me. I like 8-series, but the CL is just cloud9

The 8 series is a fantasic car but it's design is 10 years older than the CL so it's outclassed in every department. It's like comparing a W140 to an E63.

I wonder if the CL's TV doesn't work because they've turned off the terrestrial signal, or did they have freeview back then?

An 8 series is number two on my list if I can't find a decent Jaguar XJS.

Would be the Merc for me too. Looks like a much nicer place to spend any time!

Interesting point about the TV. Lovely car in every other respect though yes

I'm partial to Mercs but the BMW is a different kind of cool, despite being a generation apart from the CL. I have heard nightmares about both, but probably more about the BMW. My boss's relative had one when new (the V12 variant) and had all sorts of issues, had to finally get rid of it at a huge loss. Shame, really.

Neither, for better or worse I'd rather have this (yeah I know it's not a V12...)

First thing I thought, can't imagine a car that age being set up for digital.

I wonder if you could set it up for freeview?

Hammonds 850 looks a bit of a shed. Not much worse than a chuck of filler flaking off to reveal rust, or discovering acres of overspray when washing your newly bought car frown

Maybe Jeremy disconnected it to avoid a tv licence? biggrin

I'm sure all of those early TVs are analog over-the-air. Putting an analog-to-digital converter after the antenna and before the input would likely be the fix.

Do you mean replacing TV unit with one supporting DVB-T and also replacing aerial?

Out of the two, it'd have to be the CL, but I have to say neither really floats my boat.
