Itchy french mastiff puppy
Discussion
Hello,I have got a very itchy 7 month french mastiff cross puppy. He has got small red raised spots that seem to move around, at first I thought they was flea bits so off to the vets! We have had the house fumigated, he has aways been teated with advacote and we have never seen a flea! so that rules out fleas. We have had a skin scrape test and that come back clear. He was given anti-histermins which have been useless. Hes always been fed on arden grange large bread puppy food witch is hypo-allergenic but I changed that to wainwrights so I dont think it is a food allergy. The vets have now given a steriod injection and therios palt 750 mg tablets. I have also tried flea shampoos and tea tree oil.
Any advice would be greatly received as its so upsetting watching try to tear himself apart!

I used to have a french mastiff (dogue de bordeaux) who regularly had skin complaints bless her.
First of all, as above, do you walk him in long grass? animal fields? Grain? All of these can contribute to little lumps and bumps.
Secondly, you say you dont think it is diet related, but it is incredible how allergies can crop up with different foods, but i guess youve done the right thing by changing his food, this can take up to 3 months to come out of their system completely!
Do you have carpet? Some unfortunate pooches can have bad reactions to certain materials on the floor!
If any lumps becomes really sore or raised, i cannot recommend sudocrem highly enough! Sudcrem helps my two bulldogs with alsorts, and it used to help my dogue when she had a falre up too!
Good luck!

It sounds like puppy pyoderma but I assume the 750mg tablets are antibiotics (I do not recognise the name at all) which should help, he is the right age for this occur, though it's not usually quite so itchy.
Skin complaints can be so difficult to diagnose and treat successfully. Is it a generalised pruritis or is it specific spots. If it is belly/ legs then it could be a contact allergy.
Skin scrapes can be useful and it possible they may need doing again but if current treatment is not working then more can be done such as skin biopsies and blood samples for allergy testing.
Trying hypoallergenic diets only work if they are fed for a minimum of 6 weeks and NOTHING ELSE is fed or scavenged. Some 'hypoallergenic' diets are not as good as others, diet related skin allergies are still not as common as grass/ house dust mite/ flea allergies or bacterial infections
