I'm going to look at a freelander this afternoon. Can anybody tell me what things I'd need to pay particular attention to. It's a 1.8 petrol.

TIA smile

Headgasket, headgasket, headgasket!!

And check for water in the boot, particularly in the hidden compartment under the boot floor.

If its a mk1 the 4wd becomes a bit too 4wd

Turn in tight circles and seeing if you feel resistance. If you do then the 4wd has locked up and its about burp its gearbox

1.8 petrol? Do yourself a favour - just don't buy it! Get the TD4! And even then, check the viscous coupling!

Headgasket, transfer box and diffs.

We have a TD4 and when we were looking we decided tostay away from the older diesels and all petrol models.

Other poor build/design areas to check -

window operation all round - especially the rear door, which drops 1" to clear the gutter to allow the door to open. Control mechanism to replace is £500+
sunroof operation - plastic worm drive doesn't cut the mustard.

Worth thinking about - at least with the TD4 you would get 30+ mpg.

This is a viscous coupling problem and is quite common, they are expensive to replace with a new one but a used coupling isnt too expensive to buy (Obviously a risk of that going as well though).

The TD4 is a much better engine.

Thinking about it

Buy one with HGF

It will be far cheaper then those without HGF, you can get it fixed properly with the correct gasket, properly set liner heights and steel dowels

A big "thankyou" for your thoughts everyone, I will still go and have a look, if it's cheap enough it might be worth thinking about. (Since found out it's an R reg 5 dr.)

Rubbish this is normal, they all do this. There is a Landrover bulletin out about this.
