Lost speedo!

Was wondering if anyone could help here? Earlier i was driving when the speedo started whipping up and down to around 50mph when driving, any clue, could it be the cable? One thing i clipped a big horse st not long before, could this of got stuck on a sensor? Have no idea, help would be much appreciated, cheers.

Check the pickup sensor which is right next to the diff, and check the toothed sprocket it reads off (for cleanliness & alignment).

If that all seems fine are any other electrics playing up ? "Big fuse" can cause all sorts of odd things !

Cheers guys firstly. All electrics seem fine everything working fine, just the speedo. So this sensor is it easy to get to? I have no access to a pit at the moment. Is it visible easily?

I've replaced mine using jack/stands, it's quite easy to spot once you crawl under the back. The margin for them working or not working is quite narrow I found - a couple of turns too far away from the sprocket and it doesn't work, so I'd imagine if it's got horse st in it that could be the problem! Can't remember the exact gap it's meant to have but I'm sure someone will be along to fill that in for you! I'd clean/regap and see if that sorts it.

Thanks very much for that info! I will try what you said tomorrow evening and hope it works again, maybe it's because i was bad prior to it happeneing toasting a slk 55 amg

Mine went intermitant. Took it off and cleaned it, re-gapped it and much fiddling around to save the cost of the replacement part, but got nothing! Put a new one on and took 3 attempts to get it's gap set right (de-creasing each time). The gap is minimal, but once set I found the reading to be very accurate (I caliberated it against a GPS readout at various speeds on the motorway).

I see, welli may just try cleaning it on the car and no luck i will try replacing it. Just seems a bit odd as i hit this mountain of st before. fking horses!!!!

The usual gauge for setting the sensor gap is just a sheet of bog standard copier paper - so it is a really small gap.
