I am thinking about getting a facelift M5 wheel to replace my pre-facelift one.
Are the E46 330 sport wheels the same size? Am I right in thinking they don't have the tri-colour stitching either.
Ideally I would like alcantara but as I palm the wheel quite alot I wonder how hard wearing they would be, not to mention they are bloody expensive.
The price of E46 wheels seems to be a bit better.

The E46 wheel is the same. However, you'll need a different airbag too, if you're changing to post-facelift. Get one and then get Jack at Royal Steering Wheels to retrim it and stitch it as per your requirements.

Hi

Roofer - all E39 M5's were built using the dual stage airbag system, so a later E39 or E46 M Sport steering wheel will fit and the newer 'round' type airbag will plug in.

There is a bit of a myth on Alcantara steering wheels in so much you'll read things on the web that they wear out within 3 months etc! In reality this isn't entirely true. If you jump into the car with dirty messy hands everyday then yes, they'll wear much quicker. If you usually have clean hands and don't use the car for extensive constant driving, they'll last for years. I have an M3 CSL SMG alacantara wheel in my E39 and I changed it over almost 3 years ago now, and it was in perhaps 75% condition when I bought it. The most usual place I hole the wheel has now worn down to being smooth, but the rest of it has worn in such a way that it feels kind of 'rougher', not in an unpleasant way though.

As mentioned, Jack at Royal steering wheels can get alcantara re-trims done, I know him quite well in fact and have sold a number of wheels done by him - one of which is in a friends CB E39 M5 as he literally snatched it out of my hands in return for the amount of cash I wanted for it !

A retrim from Jack would be in the region of about £150 or so. Tri stitching is of course available and other customising such as single colour stitching can be done if you ask him nicely!

cheers, Dennis!

Cheers, Dennis!

Big up to Jack. He re trimmed my M5 wheel and he made a superb job of it.. Have a chat with him as he can do subtle changes to personalise the wheel.

You can find him on eBay.
