Hi guys,

Just looking for some advice really

Are the MoD landorvers that come to auction/for sale any good? I am really looking at one for a bit of fun but don't have a huge amount of mechanical knowledge - would I be stepping on a rake considering buying one of these or are they well maintained?

I am guessing if they have been in service they would have been treated pretty harshly but does anyone have any experience knowledge on buying one of these??

I have tried searching but seems search engine is down at the moment.

many thanks in advance for any replies.

Unless you have the money to pay someone to work on your Landy, they all like a bit of TLC and home fettling.

Mil ones will have lead hard lives, but are usually well maintained. But most are basic.

What sort of budget are you looking at and what do you think you'll use it for?

Hi there and thanks for responding.

I don't want to be spending more than say £2.5-£3k to include any immediate garage works that maybe required as it will literally be for a bit of fun and hauling rubbish/cr*p around - it's use will be more likely as a comfy tractor!! Also we live on a pretty steep hill and have been caught out last few years so may need it in winter time to get me to and from work but generally fun and see where it goes from there - I hope that gives you a better idea!

Thanks

I don't see any reason why a mil spec wouldn't suit. Just do all the normal checks. But do expect a basic spec. Many earlier 90's are fitted with a 2.5 NAD (natually aspirated diesels) and make around 67hp and have no PAS.

I think latter ones are Tdi's though.

Many thanks for the info - i wil continue searching.

I am sure it has been commented on before, but i am amazed how they hold their value!! Brand new, they seem cheap - second hand expensive!!

The only T.d.i. Engined mil spec Landrovers were the later Wolf XD models. And these on the used market are still big money compared to the average military offerings.

If you're looking for a cheap(ish) and easy to maintain motor for working around the farm then i would personally opt for an ex military 90 or 110. the 2.5 non turbo diesel will do everything you ask of it. If you wish a bit more power then drop a second hand tdi out of a disco in it, there are so many about these days that they can be purchased for peanuts and are a direct replacement for the old unit, there are differences between defender and discovery fitments but simple conversion kits are available on ebay for not a lot and include everything you need.

If i needed a farm runabout then an ex military LR it would be for me.
