Hi there,

I have an 07 plate of the above and the fuel economy is terrible. It also drives really aggressively and faster that i thought as such could it have been chipped and if so would this explain the issue? Or is the economy pretty poor on this model anyway?

i purchased through a BMW dealership but am pretty annoyed as I was expecting a cheap car to run and at the moment its far from cheap.

Would appreciate your help.

Thanks

Joe

Get it on a diagnostics and check for glow plug errors.

I have an 06 525d M sport and have 3 faulty glow plugs, these along with the control unit will be replaced.

On asking the mechanic if this could have an impact on economy he said 'absolutely'.

Currently i'm averaging 32.9mpg according to the on board and that's just not on.

Thanks, what do you think it should be averaging?

Just replied in the other thread... The pre-LCI (177bhp) engine is less economical than the upgraded one (197bhp). Our pre-LCI 525d manages about 28mpg average, but that's with a lot of short journeys. It'll do 37mpg on a long motorway run.

The pre LCI is pretty poor economy wise.

But then the official figures are...

Urban 25.90 MPG
Extra-Urban 43.50 MPG
Combined 35.30 MPG

Remember that extra urban is averaging 39mph over 7 miles with an already up to temperature engine and on a warm day, so never really achievable.

Combined is pretty much the figure you should expect for long steady runs on the motorway sat at 70mph, and for most sub 10 mile journeys, the urban figure is what to expect.

Guy who bought my A6 3.2 quattro estate off me had a 3 year old 525d from new and in that 3 years he did 210k miles and he was showing 32mpg.
Many see very close to the urban figure of around 26mpg.

It is very dependent on you, nothing else.

When you say terrible what are you getting??

I can't see how glow plugs could have anything whatsoever to do with the fuel consumption. They only operate for a few seconds to warm the combustion chamber prior to starting the engine.

That's what i thought too; but apparently they're used much more frequently on this car / engine / BMW Diesel in general.
