My boiler has been making a ticking noise constantly (even with the boiler not heating the house or water) for 6 months. I've put up with it, as it can only really be heard from outside, but now its going to be used in the next few months, I'd like it sorted.

It seems the noise it only made when its not working. I assume its a safety thing, to pull gas out the house if there was a leak in the boiler?

Its fairly old, maybe 15 years old, Valliant. Whats it likely to be? Extractor fan? Something cheap to get sorted?

Is it a combi or traditional boiler? Does it have a pilot light? If so the fan can run all the time to get rid of the heat/fumes from the pilot light. It usually runs at a slow speed then kicks in at full when the boiler fires up. Could be the fan is on its way out or needs a clean/service.

Combi, with a pilot light.

Thats what I assumed it was. Can I clean the fan? I suppose its always got to be worked on by a gas safe bloke...

I've noticed that some old fan flued boilers with pilot lights have the fan running at low speed constantly, as someone said.

Its possible you've never noticed it before and now it is slightly worn and the bearings are starting to become audible. Also the fan blades can sometimes bend and catch the fan body as they spin around.

Not really much to clean on a fan, but you can buy purpose made fan lube which is designed to lubricate and free the bearings.

But you shouldn't be opening up a boiler case unless you are competent.

I have removed and fixed the fan on my Potterton combi a couple of times, as said, I had to lube up the bearings. Next time I will probably replace the fan, last time I checked it was £120 for a new one, hence the fix.

Easy to do, had to remove the main boiler covers and then it was just two screws and a connector.
