Last year I bought a cheap stop gap/winter car as I commute to work by motorbike and the snow was causing me some problems. Nothing fancy, an unmodified 106 GTI. I'd owned one new back in 97/98 and really enjoyed it so when looking for a fun shed it was near the top of my list.

In the spring I stopped in at a garage a friend of mine runs to pick up some parts for my weekend toy and was chatting away when his son comes over raving about a tasty car parked outside. The garage in question mainly works on performance cars so I was surprised when he asked if the 106 was mine and would I consider selling it.

Taken by surprise I said yes before I'd taken a second to think about and only when he was giving me a lift home in his new car did I realise exactly what I'd agreed to. I'd nothing lined up to replace it and found myself trying to explain the situation to SHMBO even though I wasn't sure how it had happened myself. I guess an unexpected big bundle of notes had a part to play in it.

Anybody else ever found themselves in the same position and did you make the right decision?

Can't say I have, no.

Bought more than one by 'mistake' though. Usually involved stopping to test-drive something I really shouldn't have, and then not being able to walk away from it. My V70T5, for one. No intention of chopping in my trusty 850T, but while getting a service I ended up browsing the used car area. The manager chucked the keys at me and said to go and have some fun for the hour or so it would take to finish my car. Bugger knew exactly what he was doing, too....smile

I'm sure I'm not the only one that's done that.
