Bilirubin

Had a routine blood test recently which showed a bilirubin level of 428. The hosp suggested I get my GP to test it again, which I will. In the meantime though, what does it mean?

FWIW Heamaglobin was HB15.5, ALB 34, Alk phosphatase 65 gamma, GT 36 (no idea).

From what I recall from when my cat had a high bilirubin () it's like a breakdown of bile you find in the blood. Can be caused by inflammation, blockage of a bile duct or, as was the case with the cat, an infection. Definitely get it checked out!

Will stand to be corrected on any of my hazy sketchy memory.

Lots of reasons why bilirubin may be raised -some serious, some not so.
Obviously needs investigating. With a level as high as yours, i would usually expect yellow ish skin, yellow whites of eyes and skin itching. It your poo its usual colour? is you urine a different colour?
get to your gP for a retest asap.

Thanks both. Am a normal colour thanks, but had gall stones for years, so probably that. Blood test booked Thurs.

You've not given the units, but a bilirubin of 400+µmol/L would make you this colour (on the right)



Indeed above 80 µmol/L you start to look yellow. The units "µmol/L" are the commonest in use in the NHS.

I'm guessing your units are µg/dL in which case the upper limit of normal is 1500

look up gilberts syndrome - i have it so my readings are always high, but I am not like the chap in the photo above!

Thanks both. Never heard of Gilbert's Syndrome, thanks. Units not mentioned, but def normal colour. Had some liver damage some years back in a rta but doubt it's that. Will see, thanks.
