What car?

Criteria:

3 doors
~200bhp
Petrol
<1300kg
<£5k

the catch - must be capable of exceeding 40mpg if driven sensibly (i`m not talking coasting or slipstreaming lorries). Its to replace my recently written off corrado vr6 which ticked all the boxes except it would struggle to do better than 35mpg

Renaultsport Clio 182?

Don't think you'll find many sub £5K cars with 200bhp that can achieve 40mpg. 35mpg is probably a more realistic target unless you go for diesel.

To be honest you won't find a petrol that fits all your criteria. If you want that sort of economy from a car that is inevitably going to be quite old because of the price you stipulate, you are going to have to look for one with less power. You will have to work out which of your criteria is the most important to you and sacrifice one of the others.

Your criteria states 40mpg. CTR wouldn't come near confused

Cracking buy that. Budget for cambelt and tensioners if not done. Apparently tensioners can go and throw the belt.. common across all the 2.0 TFSI's from a bit of t'internet research.

Does it need to be 3 doors?

Would it not be better to say:

-prefer coupes?
-Or only need to carry 'x' people 'y' amount of the time.
-prefer 'z' seating?
-Need a boot to haul 'u'

And wouldn't it better to try and define pace or power to weight rather than engine output?

Similar with the weight too.

Why worry so much about getting 40mpg when the difference between that and something doing mid to low 30s mpg will only cost about £250 extra per year to run for every 10,000 miles you do.

Assuming it's your one and only car, why take the compromise?

For what it's worth, I've been driving tons of petrol hire cars this year and not one of them has broken 40mpg on the motorway at a steady 75.

I have no real preference on styling, rear seats are a bonus but far from necessary, boot space big enough for a large suit case. 3 door is a must
