Mazda Diesel Engines .... what car.....
Discussion
Looking at buying a Mazda 6 diesel for bimbling up and down the motorway.
Still fancy a decent BMW however I have 14k to spend, and it looks like they would be old and well specced or new and poverty
There is a newer 2.2D engine in the Mazda Sport spec but just how much better is it than the 2.0D that has been kicking around for a while.
Essentially, I'm weighing up Octy VRS, BMW 3 series (touring?), Mazda 6 Sport..... Am I missing anything?

Yes I believe you're missing one of these.

Subaru Legacy, not an MX5.

I really like the sound of a Mazda 3 2.2D sport but reading about DPF problems is putting me off any newer diesel as my next car. Check out Japchat section,, someone has a detailed review of the 2.2D engine and DPF issues in a 3 over there. For value for money a well specced Octy VRS would be my choice.

Little bit out the ordinary, I like that.
What are the diesel boxers like? Running costs and mpg of a Legacy?
Couldn't tell you. Autotrader may be able to, I've been in quite a few but not that year and they're very comfy and quiet as well if that's your thing. What are the diesel boxers like? Running costs and mpg of a Legacy?
Seem very decent cars.
2.2D is a lovely engine, the 185 certainly will get you to illegal speeds pretty quick and sits more than comfortably at motorway speeds.. MPG is 40+ and they're pretty fun for hooning in the lanes too.
Defintely the 2.2D over the 2.0D all day long.
DPF isn't a problem if you have it serviced correctly on time and driven properly. They don't like short journeys, so motorwaying etc is fine.
We've got plenty of customers who do big mileages in them, and even normal mileage too. My boss has one as his company car, only 10 miles a day mostly on country roads, no problem at all with DPF.. Though I do give the engine a good clean out out when I borrow it

Don't write off the 3-series. "Poverty spec" BMWs aren't as basic as they used to be.
What does a Mazda 6 Sport have, that a 320d SE lacks? Dual-zone climate, parking sensors, front fogs, cruise control are all standard. The only important thing I can think of that you're missing is leather seats.
£14k would get you a 57 or 08 reg Efficient Dynamics 320d SE touring with the start/stop 177bhp engine (and maybe optional leather seats).

Just been doing a bit of reading and you are right. They do come quite well loaded as standard. What does a Mazda 6 Sport have, that a 320d SE lacks? Leather would be nice.
Hmmm, 900 quid to insure http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2011...
Not as bad as I was expecting, reckon I could get that down a fair bit too.

What extra servicing is required on a DPF? Is it a forced regen? And define short journeys - would regular commute of two 10 miles 70/30 split motorway/30 limit journeys be problematic?Defintely the 2.2D over the 2.0D all day long.
