You know the type and they are getting all the more common. Generic 2.0 litre diesel and insist on driving at their speedo indicated 60mph so they can achieve eleven million mpg (in itself not a problem).

The issue arises when they attempt to 'overtake' a truck but refuse to accelerate in any way. Instead one has a situation of said 'mpg addict' elephant racing a truck at a speed difference of 2mph blocking the entire d/c (particularly annoying!) or essentially becoming a MLM on the motorway.

Your car is capable of brisk and safe acceleration so get on with it. Overtaking is a proactive manoeuvre. Don't cause an obstruction for everyone else for the sake of your mpg figures. shout

If you can't afford to drop the mpg 'target' while overtaking either sit behind the truck the entire duration of your journey, buy a different car or better yet, get the bus! smile

Not sure if they are poor or not, but those that pull out in front of you at a reasonable distance ahead and then accelerate (if you can call it that?!) so fking slowly you have to virtually stop to avoid running into them. They really piss me off.

The prevalence of this seems to depend quite heavily on what sort of car you're driving. Bumbling along in my non-descript company-car-silver eurobox I got stuck behind someone who insisted on sitting in the outside lane recently. Rather than get irate and start flashing my lights or beeping the horn I noticed a Range Rover Sport in black coming up rather quickly from behind with its xenons ablaze. I pulled in for a second so he could sit behind the monospeeder instead and surprisingly enough the guy got out the way very quickly.

The Germans have a phrase for it I believe, a word that translates to something along the lines of 'overtaking presence'?

How sure are you that these are all poor people chasing mpg numbers?

I'd have thought a lot of this overtaking at a speed differential of 3.1mph was being caused by cruise control.

I think this is going to get more prevalent, as more middle class people struggle under the burden of supporting a family and travel to a job, and a couple of families of jobless spongers and looter breeding centres, try to make their fuel go further.

Using Range Rover Sports to scare people out of your way is going to get more prevalent? wink

The Germans are right. I've noticed this phenomena many a time. Making progress in the outside lane in my Clio: no one gets out the way. Tuck into the wake of a friends 911 Turbo: suddenly we have a clear run! clap

Sorry I misread your post, I thought it was about slow people in general - not overtaking too slowly!

This annoys me too but i'm not sure this has anything to do with people being poor.

I once got stuck behind a Porsche Boxster S performing an overtake in slow motion.

I suggested something similar to the OP a months, but was shot down. Seems I'm not the only one to have noticed this.

I find it's big large thirsty 4x4's that insist on doing 48mph everywhere, Whether it's a 30, 40, 50 or 60 limit. A few years ago you'd struggle to find a big 4x4 that wasn't attempting to drive over the top of you.

As for people who pull out infront of you and then accelerate slowly, they are just cocks. Tends to be old driver mostly. I find that immediately overtaking them within the speed limit and a short past of the horn tends to wake them up, as they then start giving you various hand gestures.

I find it's polar opposites I encounter, it's either Mr. Eco in his VAG 2.0L TDI, watching his MPG clock more than his speedo, or Mr. Looney ragging the tits off of his VAG 2.0L TDI doing warp factor 10, trying to outrun the Millenium Falcon.

Don't worry, it's not just Range rovers that can "push" people to go faster. I found today that it works just as well in a black Octavia with it's Xenons on. It's all about road positioning (and the fact the car is often used by motorway cops).

Lots of them up my way of late, though this week the insigna has taken a new degree of caution around. Drivers throwing it into gaps you couldn't get bloody crisp packet in followed by "oh, a 3' gap. zooooom st bumper!!!, brake, oh, a 3' gap. zooooom st bumper!!!, brake!!!, oh, a 3' gap. zooooom st bumper, brake!!!" and so forth.

They get a wider berth than learners and old people now.

OP was too busy finding the end of his bell to read the post back to himself.

If I overtake someone in the Rover I do so at a/ a safe speed to do so, b/ within the confinds of the road traffic act.

I'm not going to break the law so some impatient, arrogant, little big man, twerp in a four wheeled penis extension can get to his inferiority complex therapy session on time.

If I get tailgated whilst overtaking I will slow down to 1/2 a mph more than the vehicle I'm passing and make sure that no matter how much that driver flashes his headlights, rev's his engine or sounds his horn there will be at least a two second gap between myself and the car I have just passed before I return to the left hand lane. Wouldn't want to cut anyone up would I?

Randomly decided to save for a house the last few weeks or so and decided I'd try driving a bit more conservatively to make the pennies count. Quite surprised that I added a decent 5 mpg for my troubles.

That said, as and when I still chose to overtake, the pedal was always planted to the floor...sometimes I even changed down out of sixth. smile

As for the Mpg economy drive, it lasted a week, I got bored and I'm now back to 37 mpg and making swifter progress.
