High-value items at home? Insurance suggestions please!
Discussion
I currently insure my home contents through Esure - because it offered cover for high-value items without any song and dance about referring to underwiters, having an alarmed cabinet, etc. All told, I pay £260pa for a total of £73000 of contents (in a pretty low-crime area). And that's with a 45% discount for 10yrs of not claiming.
The high-value items are quite ordinary really - let's imagine they are paintings hung on the wall (they're not):
Painting 1: £10000
Painting 2: £8000
Painting 3: £7000
Painting 4: £2500
Painting 5: £2000
These are all lumped together as "Specified items" and make up £180 of the £260 premium. £43 is for £29,000 of general home contents cover, and £37 is for £14,000 of "high-risk items" (over £1500) cover.
I would like to get some competitive quotes but, last time I tried, the usual comparison sites were a nightmare. Worth trying a broker?
Anyone with a similar insurance needs got any suggestions? By PM if you don't want to discuss in public.

We use Hiscox...yes they're expensive but they're very good both in terms of quality of cover and actually paying out on it....especially when you have high value items that either stay in or leave the home.
There's no need for additional specialist cover if you have say a reasonably expensive bicycle.
They have a really good function on their website to add up all your contents....most people are under insured. What a lot of people don't seem to understand (and I didn't) is that is you say have £25,000 of cover and your contents are actually worth £50,000 then the insurance company will only pay out 50% of a claim.
