BACS transfer query, do Lloyds charge mandatory £30?
Discussion
My retired Mum recently visited her Lloyds branch to make a payment to a 3rd party via BACS. They charged her £30 for the privilege. This doesnt sound right to me, sounds more like a CHAPS (instant) transaction yet the young lad behind the counter insisted they charged £30 to make a payment to any beneficiary that didnt bank with Lloyds. Anyone more sage than myself on such matters who can confirm if this is indeed their policy?

Chaps transfers are often charged but a straight forward BACS payment shouldn't incur any charges. I don't bank with Lloyds so don't know their policies but I'd be inclined to complain, sounds like she's been ripped off there, particularly considering you can make 'faster payments' transactions on most accounts these days for free.

This.Agreed, sounds like CHAPS to me.
A BACS payment would cost pennies - anyone submitting to BACS pays for the submission then a couple of pence per transaction in that submission. A submission can contain up to 1.2million transactions.
Given the volume of payments the banks do they pay virtually nothing..

Must be something wrong.
When Mrs F wanted to transfer money from her high interest (laugh yeah right) regular saver account that had matured, Barclays wanted to charge her £30 for a cheque.
The transfer by some electronic means was free, but took a week, a chase and a complaint to the manager. Apparently the regular person who knew how to do this was on holiday and the person transferred from another branc only knew enough to fill out a note and leave it on someone's desk, and they failed to do that right.
The manager got it moved in 3 hours after a complaint.
She could, of course, have simply drawn it out in folding and walked across the High St.
