Alternator Connections??
Discussion
The alternator on my 4.3 packed up recently, so I had to exchange it for another one. Unfortunately, the new one has a self contained diode pack, and therefore looks different at the back where the connectors are.
The main connection to the battery is obvious, because that terminal is much thicker than the others, so I've connected the two thick brown leads to that. However, I'm left with a thin black lead, and a thin brown/yellow lead. I've checked the leads with a multi-meter, and the black lead is an earth. The brown/yellow lead provides 12v when the ignition is switched on. The alternator has one spade connector on the perimeter of the alternator, and another spade connector nearer the center. Presumably, one of these is used for the suppressor? Or are the suppressors built in these days? There is also another terminal requiring a 'ring connector'.
There was no connection diagram supplied, so I'd be very grateful if somebody could steer me in the right direction, so I can get the car running, and get out in this nice weather.
Thanks,
Dan.

The brown yellow is the ignition warning light, but this also 'kick starts/ excites' the field.
On Mine the black lead goes to the smaller terminal post (ring terminal), the Big Browns to the larger terminal post. The central spade terminal is for the brown/yellow wire, and the outer spade connection is for the suppressor.
The central spade is probably designed for an alternator plug with 3 spades - the larger spades are for the brown terminals, this may have a plastic cover which only allows connection of the smaller spade.
If thats not clear, mail me & I'll send a picture.
