Took my first pillion yesterday and ooohhh my god it was scarey.

My mate needed a lift hom from work so I came and picked him up, it was my first time carrying a pillion since I was a kid and gave backies for 50p a go on my wee 50cc putch.

Anyways it felt like the front wheel was nearly lifting off the ground everytime I accelerated. Is it always like this? It felt very wobbly too. Do you think this was just because he had never been on the back of a bike before?

A lot depends on the bike. Heavier bikes generally suffer less. It also depends on the experience of the pillion, how they sit etc. You get used to it and addjust your riding style accordingly. If it feels like the front's light, lean forward a bit and keep those elbows bent.

Wait till you take a virgin pillion and they start trying to lift the bike up mid corner!

Go at your own pace till you are happy, but with the right pillion, you can go almost as fast as solo.

A few tips - Keep the riding smooth, leave your self longer to slow down and for smooth gearchanges, only dip the clutch slightly when changing gear.

I took my father pillion a few months ago. As it was the first time he'd ever been on a bike, I gave him the "get on after me, put your feet here, sit like a sack of potatoes and DON'T MOVE, just lean with the bike" speech.

He was a model pillion - right up until the first corner. And every corner after that. Why, in the name of arse, did he think that shifting his bum over bit by bit would help with the handling??

To avoid the pillion making unexpected movements in a bend, always brief them to sit there like a sack of spuds. The rider controls the bike, not the passenger.

Just back from Glasgow with my other mate as a pillion (he's smaller) and it was great, no bother atall just like riding alone except with less power.

I think the ginger was just too nervis and was wobbling about trying to hard to lean into corners.

Weird actually, my mate has had a phobie of bikes since he was a kid because stupid me scared him on my 50cc putch magnum.

Now he loves it and says he may even go do him cbt and get a 125 for whats left of the summer.

It's a desease I tell ya, all my mates want bikes now.
