Having just sold my GTV decided to get a comfy four seat convertible that could be brought back to showroom condition.

Always had a soft spot for Audi 80 cabs, especially with the lazy V6 so that so suits the relaxed nature of the car and found one on Ebay

Contacted the owner and got a lot of information and loads of photos = it really does appear to be immaculate.

Ended up putting in a bid that I was convinced was going to be well and truly beaten but ended up getting for what i consider to be a really low price.

Due to collect on Sunday but owner emailed me today sayin g that if I did not want to proceed all I needed to do was let him know so he could make other arrangements.

As the car was apparently advertised elsewhere I reckon he's received a more realistic offer for the car and is trying to ease me out of the car - never been told by a seller that its ok if I do not want to buy a car

I expect he just doesn't want to sell for so cheap.

Just so long as you know as this is sure to come up: He is under no obligation to sell to you under Ebay rules. As you are under no obligation to buy from him, despite you having the winning bid. Ebay Motors has different rules from the rest of Ebay.

but don't let that put you off from getting it from him. If possible, give him a call. he is far less likely to give you the runaround over the phone, than via e-mails

It's my guess he knows you have had a bargain and is reluctant to sell at the low price so is offering you an opt out hoping you'll take it. He seems sort of decent though and won't go back on the deal, only if you take him up on the offer to cancel. That's how I read it anyway.

Papa Hotel - thats what i'm thinking. seems like a decent seller, answered every question I asked, I've seen very tatty cars for the money I've paid, similar condition cars seem to be a good 30-50% more

Seems like it's his fault for not putting a big enough reserve on it, he knew the risks so if he's not happy he's fked himself over basically.

I guess there was no reserve on the listing? Mind you, i'm not even sure if eBay motors has reserve prices like the rest of eBay as i've never looked at the vehicle section.

It's why whenever I sell something on eBay, which isn't often, I always put a reserve on it for the minimum amount I would be prepared to take for whatever I am selling.

Sounds like you got a bargain though mate. Good luck with the purchase.

There was a thread about his recently - along the lines of potential buyers emailing rather than calling etc etc.

Why post on the forum and ask everyone to second guess what he /she may or may not be thinking? Pick up the phone man and sort it out shoot

A car auction on eBay works just the same way I believe. I've got mine on there right now with the reserve set at the lowest price I'd take, and a Buy it Now a bit higher. I don't see why you wouldn't if you would be genuinely upset getting less. Madness.

I thought it was just the classified listing on eBay motors (along with property) that had non-binding bids.

My mistake if not.

nah, same for houses iirc. no matter what method of selling, vehicle bids are non-binding
