Hi all,

First time poster in this section, looking for some help.

Me and my father plan on doing a track day towards the end of the month at Goodwood, for this we've been told we need to bring our own "Blue Label Helmet's". I know nothing about these helmets, we've never done a track day in our car at all so we are new to all of this. Searching for this type of helmet has been quite a pain. So can anyone recommend any sites with Blue Label Helmets for sale as cheaply as possible (and I have checked ebay!)

Many thanks in advance

Phil

Sounds to me like they want you to take them bearing a blue MSA sticker (issued by a scrutineer)? Seems like overkill, especially as a fair few trackdayers won't know an issuing scrutineer...

Alternatively, some bike helmets (type A, IIRC) also carry a blue sticker (NOT the MSA sticker though). But, as it's a car event, it would seem downright odd to ask for one of these (more so given that they're not permitted by a number of circuits).

If I were you, I'd give them a ring to clarify, but my gut feeling is they're after a lid that meets the standards currently laid out in the MSA "Blue Book" - see page 166: http://www.msauk.org/uploadedfiles/msa_forms/blueb...

Thanks for the advice, my dad said he was going to call the people at goodwood tomorrow anyway so we'll see what happens, I'm going to be out tomorrow looking for helmets too, so hopefully something good will come of this smile

Suitable helmets are labelled by scrutineers with a dated label which has an expiry date.

Why compromise your head's safety with the cheapest possible option? Accidents do happen and when I competed in motor sports the helmet cost was always the last consideration, protection of my head and brain was paramount!

Only if you take them to an issuing scrutineer after you've bought them... they don't come with them on, and lack of a MSA sticker doesn't render them unacceptable for track day use if they carry any of the other relevant approvals (were the organisers to bother checking!).

Id guess that theyre referring to BS labels, rather than MSA scrute stickers (or at least, youd hope so, because an MSA approval sticker is something you get from a scrutineer, the helmet doesnt come with it attached). The trouble is though, that BS6658-85 Type A (or the lesser B) standard was superceded by the inferior ECE22.05 standard a few years ago: so buying a BS helmet is now far from simple.

Of course, 'a blue label helmet' means f*ck all; and the organiser shouldnt be using euphamistic terms.

But that would be bizzare - it's the red labelled BS6658-85 Type A/FR that is covered in the current MSA regs rather than the "standard" blue labelled Type A!

Personally, if I were the OP I'd either look at Snell 2010 helmets if budget will stretch to it or perhaps ask the organiser if they have lids to hire?

Update: I went into a shop today selling helmets, and the owner commented that his helmets had an ACU Gold Sticker on them, and that this is ok for track days, and sprints/competing depending on the venue, he said that Brands hatch and Silverstone would accept them, and to check out Goodwood. Is this info accurate?

ACU Gold stickers used to be applied to all BS6658-85 Type A helmets (the BS label was blue; hence the confusion, as the current MSA approval sticker which you receive after a scrutineer first inspects a new helmet, is blue too).

Because the new ECE22.05 standard replaced the superior British standard, this is what youll find on all the helmets in bike shops now. As a result many people now use the ACU Gold label as an indication that a new helmet meets the old BS6658-A standard. As far as I can recall the BS6658-A isnt legal for any MSA events now; although the physically identical (but with a Nomex lining) BS6658-85 Type A/FR helmet is, until the end of 2015.

As you can see, demanding an MSA compliant lid would be foolish, seeing that the only difference is a fireproof lining - of little use to trackdayers in jeans and shirt-sleeves...

^^^ this.

Not technically allowed by some TDOs or for competition. (if indeed they checked)

But if you decide to run the albeit small risk of getting it checked on the day, don't buy a lid solely on the basis that it carried an ACU gold sticker (stickers can be bought new on eBay!). Probably less of an issue though if it is a physical shop than some "random".

You can get some Snell 2010 lids at low prices these days - definitely no issue with approvals on those for track day - but all depends on whether you can find ones you like that fit.

Been on a couple of Goodwood track days and I've never seen anybody check helmets either, or any track day for that matter.

And also the date on the sticker is not an expiry date, it's marked with the year the sticker book was issued. This was explained to me by a scrutineer as the year on the sticker he was applying to my brand new helmet was actually the previous year.

As said by others, seems an excessive measure for a trackday (if it is indeed the MSA blue sticker they were referring to) but most current vehicle specific helmets would meet the blue book criteria for the sticker.

You can get a Snell 2005 (MSA approved until at least 2015) for £139 from hedtec or V2 pro. These are in my opinion more than adequate for track use and those who tell you they're no good are probably brand snobs ;-)

unless some numpty in the trackday management thinks MSA blue stickers are like ACU gold stickers and can come pre attached ...

Competing - he's talking utter XXXX..

Track days - recommended that you get an "MSA" approved helmet. Then there can't be any debate / disappointment.
