Nissan Almeira engine coated in gunk?

Just been to see a Nissan Almeira Tino my sister is looking at getting, 54 plate 1.8 SE, very tidy, lots of toys etc, but under the bonnet it looks like the engine and bay has at some point been sprayed with a laquer type finish, which now has gone yellow and is peeling off.

Is this a Nissan application, or does anyone know what this stuff is?
