Very strange Police activity on the A30 nr. Black bush Airport this morning.

Just past the airport roundabout heading towards Basingstoke, and just past the crossroads to Fleet, Eversley, Earley, etc., a scamera van was parked on the central reservation with two additional video camera on tripods.

Then, spaced at roughly 20m intervals in 1s or 2s on the opposite side of the road (ie. London bound) were Police officers in hi-vis jackets. Most were ordinary constables (ie. beat helmets) rather than traffic (white-topped caps).
Must have been about 7 or 8 groups of them, stretching off down the hill to the start/end of the dual carriageway.

What was all that about then?

A colleague has just told me that he came though the same way shortly after me and says he saw stab jackets and riot helmets too. So even more curious now.

Not a Broadmoor warning was it?

Was at Blackbushe a few years ago and there was a break out at Broadmoor and the entire area was locked down almost immediately.

Numerous roadblocks on the A30...

Almost certainly ANPR checks, per your description that is more or less how my local force man these, with backups by traffic cars/bikes to get the "fail to stop when requested" merchants.

Surely they don't pack the riot gear for people who fail to stop I think there is a little more to it than that!

The thing that I find confusing is that for London-bound traffic they would be passing all the Police officers and THEN pass the camera van, and going in the opposite direction (ie. me this morning) then would pass the van and then nothing else.

Doesn't make sense.

Whats ANPR?

There was a camera set up for tax checks on the A30 the otherside of basingstoke about a month ago.

I agree with FiF - definitely sounds like an ANPR set-up.

Excellent! Have to say that one thing I DO approve the BiB using cameras for is ANPR!

Can I request that they should do similar things in my area?

Further info: Apparantly they were all the way up the Eversley road too. A major operation then.

And they were only just packing up and going when I passed on the way home at 17:50 too - transit vans and Police cars everywhere.

Jon they do this quite a lot round here. I live off Hawley lane and they often have the ANPR van down there (just near the dip in the road and the church crossroads).

The bib also now have a favourite spot sitting at the roundabout at the end of the downhill stretch of the A30 heading to Blackwater (just before Blackwater).

I spoke to them a couple of weeks ago to ask what they were up to and they are pulling anyone suspicious looking, no seatbelt etc over and then searching car/van for stolen goods, checking for outstanding warrants and so on. The week before they had caught 2 people with stolen goods and one sex offender who was wanted.

The thing I am confused about is both of the these examples are bib's doing REAL bib work (i.e what we pay our taxes for).

Its a worrying trend thats for sure. Next thing they will be dealing with muggings as well instead of mugging us motorists

Hmm I do seem to be in cynical mode tonight!

ANPR cameras read vehicle plates travelling on both carriageways. Those approaching the cameras from the front and those going away from the cameras, up the arse! Thats why they have two cameras and need officers either side of the van

On the local news last night it carried the story that they have found several shotguns (one recently fired apparently) and a safe on waste ground behind a traveler camp in a dawn raid.

The bobbies in antistab jackets are holding the perimeter until the whole area is searched. I beleive the search carries on today (The bobbies were there all night).

I'm guessing the white van with cameras was justified as the bobbies were standing on the side of a very busy/fastish road.
