Examples have to start somewhere. What is needed now though is other sentences to fall into line. Otherwise the exercise is pointless. OT, WTF were army cadets doing clearing the st up?? (as seen on news last night). FFS get the aholes that caused it doing it with bright orange jump suits on.

Good stuff I hope they keep throwing the book at them.

The penalties for getting involved have to be severe enough to deter people.

Liberal Democrat MP Tom Brake said sentences "should be about restorative justice" not retribution
I don't swear much on here but fk off Mr Brake, I want retribution, these toerags have caused huge amounts of damage and I want to see them pay severely (sp?) for it.

Surely these Human Rights Groups are just the Internet Trolls of real life?

They serve no purpose except pissing the country off.

Didnt they get 4 years for incitement to riot? Incitement does not mean there has to be a riot at the end of it to be a crime???

I hope it does go to the court of appeal and i hope when it gets there it gets thrown out. Scum deserve everything they get, might be a deterrent to others.

And it the EU try to get involved, i hope Cameron grows some back bone and tells them where to go.

Not really a surprise that the BBC and Grauniad don't want tough sentencing. rolleyes

Send them down. It is what the justice system is supposed to do.

...Mr Brake told the BBC's Newsnight that some of those convicted had received sentences which would have been different if they had committed the same crime the day before the riots...
What Mr Brake doesn't get is that there is a massive difference between shoplifting and looting. At least regular shoplifters and burglars have the decency to be discreet about their crime.

Lets hope it's the start of more realists sentances for all crimes, so a prison sentance really does become a deterant

From reading the news I got the impression they had updated a status on facebook about rioting. They had actually created events and organised a time and place to meet whilst openly describing how they'd smash up the city. Two years only seems harsh because of the previous sentances been given out. This should be the norm.

Some of them were too harsh, imo. 6 months and a criminal record for the engineering student who nabbed £3.50 of water from a shop?

fk off.

Make examples where examples are needed.

Apparently 99pc of callers to Sky News this morning support the sentences.

In the UK crime against the state has always attracted draconian sentences.

To a large extent the length of the sentences relates to the nature of the prosecution chosen by the CPS. Judges intensely dislike conspiracy and incitement in any crime. Wise choice by a prosecution looking for an example to be made.

Remember the Great Train Robbery: the sentences astounded the country. The crime was never repeated. That is the point.

The government were frightened by these events as were the majority of the sane amongst the general public. these were heinous crimes. Arson with intent to endanger life and indeed Murder in these circumstances will attract massive penalties. So they should. And in the case of the Riots I think they will. Good.

We are far too lenient with our sentencing of serious dangerous, vicious and thoroughly evil criminals who are becoming a real threat to the structure of society.

Hence ASBO's have been utterly ineffective as to become a badge of honour.

I do not think many of these rioters will laugh this off I think they will be in utter shock as will all their cronies. That was the idea. This will work.

Good: more of the same please I want to be able to sleep safely at night.

Unfortunately I fear appeals will be made and may reduce the sentences although the point may be made on the public as a whole and rioters in general by that time. We need to change this ridiculous nonsense.

Crime cannot be allowed to pay.

Jail the scum for a very long time. End of problem.

We need to protect ourselves.
