My friend has just had some awful news that her beloved BMW X5 has got to have some major (expensive) work done to it. Im scared she is being ripped off as the price the mechanic has given her is HUGE!
It needs 2 new injectors at £200 each and the tank needs to be striped and cleaned.
He is charging her around £1500!
Just wondering if any of you guys know or have experienced this and is he charging her too much? He hasnt told her the price of his labour yet.
Thanks

wouldnt the £1500 include labour if its only £400 in parts? whats caused the tank to need cleaning?

Thats what i mean, the labour costs must be huge if its only costing 400 in parts! Urmm, idiot husband decided to put red in it to "save money". Well that worked.

Is it just me, or does £200 sounds very cheap for new injectors for a modern diesel lump?

Doesn't sound too bad at all to be honest. Injectors are made of the queen's bogeys and theres quite a bit of work involved to get the tank out and back in again.

Sounds like a half-decent quote, a lot of work involved...

Just spoke to my mechanic and he also says the price is normal because the tank needs major cleaning to get the dirty fuel out as the new injectors will be very sensitive to dirty fuel like red. Cheers guys, ive let her know the score, shes gonna fix it up and sell it now. Thanks smile

Dirty fuel ? Isn't red diesel, just diesel with a dye ? Same grade, etc ?

Actually, something's just sprung to mind.

BMW X5, red diesel. Does your friend like Dags by any chance?

At over £6 gallon, he would only have to have used Red for a few tankfulls and he'd still be up.?

I've heard several cases of £6K+ bills being charged by dealers for mis-fueled X5's, so she's got off lightly.

I would have thought that if something had damaged a couple of injectors then they'd all need replacing.

Red diesel wouldn't cause this, petrol would.

As a couple of other posters have suggested, it might have been. Either petrol or contaminated red diesel.

Are they not doing the work to clean the dye from the red diesel out.

How much would a new tank and fuel lines be?

OP, I take it your friend got caught?

Lol! No it would take about a years worth of 'average' driving to break even. Red is about 70p a litre in bulk buy (as we had the works tank filled up 2 weeks ago).

Also, i also doubt it was the actual red diesels fault. Ive seen red in 'modern' diesels, and they have been fine (nissan navara 2.5 dci, Audi a3 2.0 tdi, mercedes c220 cdi, golf pd tdi, astra 1.9 cdti and even a 'old' 307 hdi). They havent smoked, having caused any damage, and still run fine to this day.

It would have been storage in old dirrty containers before hand and probably had stuff in it then. But even so, if you filter it out in the funnel before pouring it in, it should be fine again. Ive seen it done from containers with swarf from a band saw in it, and it was filterd as a said, and put into the tank and it worked fine. No smoke, or anything. And there were fueld from 3 different suppliers of 'red diesel'.

I think alot of people who warn of the potential issues have no experience/knowledge of it.

PS. This wasnt me, all my cars have been petrol. Ive owned a land rover discovery which was diesel but only had it for a couple of weeks and it came with a full tank of 'normal' diesel so i never actually had to fuel it.

No, not by changing two injectors they're not.

As others have already said, there's nothing wrong with red diesel & red diesel alone would not of caused any damage what so ever.
