My 2004 RX8 has a patch of rust around the third brakelight on the tailgate. It's annoying and unsightly.

There is a black bootlid (Same colour) in good condition on eBay for £91 delivered from a salvage place. I'm sorely tempted, rather than the hassle of spraying etc, to just replace it.

Is this likely to be a straightforward job, and would there be any issues with panel fit/colour? If it's simply a case of me unbolting and rebolting then it's worth a go- Not sure how the brakelight connects up but suspect it's not rocket science.

The chance of a panel that's in a salvage yard actually being 100% clean and ready to fit is probably slim.
For the cost of painting your own bootlid it will be a much better job and if treated correctly the rust won't return.
Other than the rust is your bootlid clean? No dings or dents?

Is the rust on the outside? I have a small patch on the inside near the latch which is on my to do list. As stated already I would rather fix my own panel than take a chance with a scrappy job.

It's on the outside around the brakelight, a fairly common place for it to go I think. There's also a bit of corrosion around the shutting edge on the inside too.

Car's currently up for sale so I'm not too fussed about spending lots of money on it- But I take the point about the scrapyard parts!

I expect if I were to remove it and take it into my local tame paint shop it would be fairly cheap to spray it "Off the car".

So a used lid from a scappers could have a similar issue if not now 6 months down the road??

I would either replace with a new panel if it is really bad, if its minor just get your existing lid sorted.

I would give them the whole car not just the lid.

This auction is for a used black boot lid removed from a Mazda RX8 2004 model.

The item is used but in good condition and there are no large scratches or stone chips.
Will probably leave it then. I imagine that 90pc of these parts aren't the right colour for the buyers so there is an expectation it will be sprayed...
