She who must be obeyed is dictating that we need to upgrade my station car - trouble is I'm not sure where to pitch the price, so open to your advice, or shall i just stick on ebay and hope for the best?

Its a '99 528i SE Touring Auto in Met Blue with biege leather, 17" sports alloys, sunroof, AC, etc with 60,000 miles and full service history (i had to get the service booked restamped by the dealer as the previous owner had forgotten to do it so its a bit messy, but genuine!), towbar fitted recently, tinted rear windows, has 2 previous owners and drives very well.

Its a bit tatty around the edges, couple of scratches, minor dinks. Most of these can be fixed with a replacement drivers door & bonnet (or a respray of these panels) but it has never worried me as its a station car, it polishes up OK but is never going to be a show winner.

So how much do you think? I was expecting about £1200 as p/x maybe £1500 as private or am i way off?

Sounds about right for a private sale but when I tried to p/x a similar saloon most garages just said no thanks at any price.

£1200 - is it really worth changing it? You'll need to spend 10 times that to get something genuinelly better..

I think you could get nearer 2 bags of sand privately.

She needs 7 seats so the 5er won't fit the bill - will see if i get anything offered as a p/x or else onto fleabay i guess.

On the plus side, i'll swap over to her car which is a 60plate 1er so its not all bad smile

I'd expect well under a grand if you p/x it.

If it's low mileage you might be able to get Old Colonel Cars interested in it, depending on how well it scrubs up.

I'd pay £2k for a low mileage 528i Tourer, I'm sure many would. Mileage becomes more important than age at this end of the market.

My Dad might be interested but it depends how bad the bodywork is? I suspect from what you say about the body then £1200 might be all it's worth.

Hi GBB - its not bad really, just being honest, no rust just a couple of minor dinks (front edge of bonnet over the kidney's), one on the drivers door, fairly deep scratch on the drivers door and some scratches on the bonnet, a some lighter marks on the back bumper. Previous owner lived in central london so picked up the usual parking marks - as i said if you got a replacement door and bonnet from a breakers you'd fix the majority of it.

Haven't cleaned it yet or even tried to p/x - will do that and get some photos up

If it can clean up to a decent level, i.e. no worse than most cars of that age out there then with a good advert in the right place, I don't think £2k is too far off. The mileage, service history and overall mechanical order as well as interior are obviously important and a new MOT will help no end IMO.

I'd say it's probably worth £2k tbh, have a look at similar cars on the market.
I've got a leggy 147k 99 T plate one too, in desirable titan silver, full grey leather, auto, pretty much unmarked paint and no rust. I'm chopping it in the next few weeks with 12months MOT and would hope for £1200 ish, am I dreaming.

Sure it's Titan? I thought that was a post-facelift colour only, with Arctic, Aspen and one other silver being the pre-facelift colours - but I could well be wrong!

£1200 as a private sale sounds reasonable. As a p/x it sounds optimistic to me.

Could be right, thinking about it Artic Silver does ring a bell, I've had it a few years now hehe. When I say chop it, I really mean sell it privately as a trade-in I think you'd be lucky to get £500 for any E39 of that era, regardless of mileage or condition from a trader.

My 1999 528 is Titan metallic silver, with Shadowline trim.
