Recently became the adoptive parents of a tiny little Basset/Springer pup. Had to wait three weeks for the adoption to go through (he was too young being just five weeks old) and so far we've had him a week today.

Safe to say he's settled in really well.

Now, potty training, on the whole it's been utterly brilliant, normally goes outside for big and small jobs and other than the very occasional accident, pretty much sorted so long as we keep an eye on him.

However, today, he's wee'd and poo'd all over the bloody house and if you try to get him to go outside he scarpers and hides! What the hell!?!?!?

It's raining and he seems to absolutely HATE the rain and will not go out in it - funny little bugger. Mind you, as he's an 80mph belly to ground missile it must be horrible getting wet on both sides at once smile

Cute. Looks more like a Collie/Springer X but does look to have chunky legs unlike either. Puppies sometimes don't like the cold and rain, don't blame them TBH!

It was very similar with our Lab puppy (now 4 months old).

After day 1, he was basically house trained... But we had about 2 seconds from his "signal" (crying/walking towards door/etc.) to get him out or he burst.

There were times he went about a week without a single accident, and then had 4 or 5 in one day.

It's now been about 2 weeks since the last one, his signals are getting a lot clearer and he can hold it longer if we're too slow or sleep in.

He hates going out in the rain, but if I go out he'll follow me.
If our (adult) German Shepherd asks to go out and then sees it's raining, she'll go back to bed and hold it in as long as possible rolleyes

Once you have fed him put his lead on straight away and walk him round the garden so he can do his stuff, "drag" him firmly but gently if you have to. That way he learns that the rain is nothing to worry about as you (his pack leader) are with him.

I did this with all 3 Goldies we have owned and once they get used to the rain they progress to puddles, small ponds, lakes, rivers.......you get the picture biggrin

Sounds very much like he doesn't like the rain. I always accompany mine outside so I can reward appropriately asap.

I would not drag him anywhere as this is only likely to produce even more negative associations frown

Put a coat on him (as long as he doesn't get scared by it!)

Our whippet was similar as a pup. Popped a coat on him, went out in the rain with him and was fine.

Even now if it really heavy rain we'll pop a coat on him to go in the garden, though he is a bit ore tolerant of the rain these days!

Whatever you do don't get frustrated by him if he has episodes or force him to go out as will make him worse.

Real problem is (apart from the simple fact he is sooooo damn cute!) his signals vary from 0.2 of a second to none whatsoever.

So we let him out when he wakes up or has been fed or had a drink or just not been for a while. He'll get there, he's only a baby.

The rain isn't really that much of a problem; we just carry him outside and pop him under a bush! He likes weeing under bushes.

I find it quite amusing really that he doesn't like the rain, I'm not that keen on it myself, whereas our other dog (Phoebe) cannot get enough of the wet stuff. Show her a puddle and she literally dives into it. Comical little chap he is though, seeing him stood on the doorstep thinking about a trip into the garden, thinking better of it and turning round and weeing on the doormat, while naughty, is mighty cute.

What a cutie!

Our springer hates going out for a pee in the rain, however if you use the W word she'll go out whatever the weather - she'd just prefer not to get wet for the sake of a pee!

Keep at it, keep encouraging and rewarding and you'll get there.

Cute!

Our pup hates rain, too.

In fact, our 3yo hates rain, as well.

Pup won't poop in the rain unless she absolutely has to!
