Tempting... very tempting. What is to be expected MPG wise, will it do late 20's on a run?

Expensive!

I went out for a play in a random guys Type R and he was saying how expensive it was to run... he said if you get 20mpg you were lucky.

It was an immense car though mildly tuned but done properly to circa 350bhp. I wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was... in fact, I didn't want it to be but I was very very impressed!

Late 20's is a pipe dream. You are looking between 18-23mpg in the real world. They are very thirsty. If you drove like miss daisy then maybe but it's unlikely. If you Wang mpg look elsewhere. I get more out of my 997 and far better range. Awesome bit of kit though.

Probably, but expect mid 20's over a tank.

My newage STi will return 30'ish on a run if driven square on 70. It's been mapped by JGM to 340'ish bhp. I don't know about classics, but with mixed driving I would have thought 20 mpg is the absolute best you will get. These cars are just not good on fuel frown

I've been running a classic sti for about 8 years. Its only running about 300 bhp and on my commute to work (mostly 60 to 70mph on motorways) i can manage around 260 to 300 miles to a tank. obviously thats taking it easy staying off boost as much as possible. Must be in the high 20's to 30's.

If i use it like its supposed to its down to about 160 miles to a tank.

Used half a tank on a track day covering 50 miles so its all down to how you use it.

Johnny.

On my last track day I averaged 7 mpg... On the way to my dear old Nans I get about 12 wink with today's petrol prices they need to be a toy, not a daily frown

Out of my T2000, which is pretty much the same as an RB5, my average mpg was a heady 16. When having some some fun I managed to do a half a tank at 6mpg. But don't let you put you off, it's a stonking bit of kit.

I get about 26mpg from my 2000 turbo.
I don't do much town driving though.

Even cruising at 90 you should expect 27ish if it's a long enough run, 23 burbling around and mid-high teens giving it big licks cross country assuming the car is standard.

I can't give any figures but as far as I am aware, from other scooby enthusiasts, if they are used on motorways @70 - 80 mph, you are going to see hugely differing consumption figures depending on whether the car is UK or JDM. A couple of friends had a trip from Surrey up to Donington I believe, one in a MY03 ish type UK (can't remember exactly as he didn't have it for long) the other was in an MY99 STI v6 with not much difference in power. The JDM used twice as much fuel for the same journey under the same conditions. They basically put it down to the JDM being on boost at 70-80 whereas the UK was not.

Is that down to gearing?

From memory of my Turbo 2000 you could manage late 20s on a run, I dont know if the RB5 in question would manage that with the PPP. I dont see why not. Cracking car though!

if you worry about fuel costs do not get a scooby honestly as you buy a car to enjoy it not to worry about mpg-i drive a subaru kit car with 420bhp-gets taken out at least twice a week and refilled after lol

You'll get about 20 mpg but might see 30 mpg crusing on the motorway at 70.

Just remember when buying one of these the one to have is the WR model, but very few RB5' were sold as a WR - with 240 bhp/250 lb ft (easy way to tell is the high level spoiler, look carefully at the speedo/rev counter for the WR logo). I've had one of each and the WR was much more fun.

Most RB5's are just cosmetic - ie exactly the same to drive as a UK turbo other than having 17" alloys and nicer seats/body colour no other difference to drive.

If retro fitted with the WR upgrade will have prodrive remapped ecu, prodrive exhaust and steel turbo Y pipe.

Big difference in performance between the real thing (WR) and a normal one, the power comes in that bit earlier with a much bigger push, just feels much more fun to drive, without over-stressing the engine (not a very strong engine on these cars unlike the Sti models so avoid ones with big bhp unless its been fitted with an Sti engine).

Yes it is. I used to know a bit more detail off the top of my head, like the relative MPH per 1k revs, when I was actively using my STI v2. If I remember correctly though, this is the reason why the JDM STI cars are generally stated as having sub 5 secs 0-60 whereas the UK higher power cars (well the classics anyway) are generally stated to be over 5 sec 0-60. It's just that the UK drivetrain has longer ratios, more suited to UK general use.
When the gearbox ate itself on my car, I sourced a later (2002 I think) and stronger UK box and diff as the car was my daily driver at the time. Shortly after this though, my first child arrived and the car was taken off the road. It is still off the road today so I did't ever get the chance to see what difference it made to economy. A good friend of mine (that runs a 9 sec scooby drag car) implied that the UK ratios may even benefit qtr mile times as although the ratios are longer and as such, acceleration is affected, a 300ish BHP UK car should be able to complete the quarter without the need to change to 4th whereas the JDM cars would generally need to change to 4th which then has bearing on the ET. I know that there a many other factors that affect the ET but the thought was based on identical cars, one with UK ratios compared to the same car with JDM ratios.

I'm sure Simon JGM would be able to give a lot more detail on this though and I am by no means trying to say that either UK or JDM are particularly good when it come to fuel economy. It's all subjective I suppose, it depends on your expectations.

I think that this site is quite informative though.
