Whats the banging noise???
Discussion
Chris, or anyone who has had similar prob, My Geep has developed a mehanical sounding 'clang' or banging noise which appears around 50% of time when i re-apply acceleration after or sometimes during cornering. The noise appears to come from rear (although i know appearences can be deceiving) and the Geep seems to jerk in time with the noise, actually changing direction of travel slightly when cornering ( very hairy)
I have checked: Leafsprings, U-bolts, Shocks, shock mounts, chassis, all seem fine.
I have jumped on bumpers in every corner and heard nothing untoward, and have had a quick look at gearbox mounts(although im not really sure what to check for)and spotted nothing.
I am wondering if i could have a problem with the diff or prop? Obviously its unroadworthy at the moment and im missing all the glorious weather so any help appreciated!

the bearings seem fine, no movement at all, and ive driven many'a'car with bearing probs and none behaved like this. The banging noise is quite loud. How do i check for worn prop? ive given it a good firm shake (oo er!) and it doesnt seem to be loose or visibly worn. Could it poosibly from gearbox end? Its sooo frustrating!
Is there any play in the diff?
A small amount of movement (rotation) in the input flange is OK but if there is a lot of rotation before it stops (so engaged to drive the wheels then that will make that sort of noise and in effect due to the abrupt application of drive would possibly cause a slight deviation if cornering as it would "shock" the system.
Are the prop shaft U/j's stiff or have excess side play.
Easiest way to check is with the shaft off the vehicle.
A semi seized or seized U/J can cause problems.
Is there play in the rear wheel bearings if you jack the axle up and try rocking the wheels at the top/bottom and side to side?
Whilst the axle and wheels are in the air what does the diff sound like if you rotate the wheels by hand?
The other possible problem which would need the diff taking out of the axle to check properly is the bearings that the diff actually runs in.
Gearbox.
If you have got the box in gear (axle raised and stands applied) is there much play in the box when you try turning the propshaft?
Does any gear make the sound worse when driving on the road?
A silly one I know but are all the bolts holding the box to the engine tight/in place?
Are the gearbox and axle oil levels correct?
You say you have checked the springs etc so unless it is hiding we can hopefully rule out the bushes in the springs having worn excessively.
You are certain there is no axle roll on the springs so that is also hopefully out of the possibilities.
Will try to think of other possibilities and see what your replies to the above are.
