I have just finished painting the bedroom. Not a considerable job, but hard enough covering over bright purple with magnolia !

Some little tips I have learnt the hard way.

1. Don't use value emulsion paint. The B&Q one doesn't cover well but still needs to be watered down to work with a roller (hence 3 coats)

2. Frogtape is a brilliant (but expensive) alternative to masking tape. Ideal for keeping gloss paint on the wood and off the walls/floor.

3. Do not under any circumstance try using water based gloss. The benefit of reduced 'fumes' and ease of washing brushes is eradicated by the fact it doesn't cover the old paint on the first coat and doesn't flow to a smooth finish like an oil based gloss does.

Can anyone add to the list of decorators secrets ?

1) Don't use a dry roller - dampen with water.
2) Always sand before you gloss.

and more importantly....

3) A decorator never uses masking tape. wink

Edited to add a little known secret......

4) Gloss paint can be rollered on.

First of all paint the celling.

Paint the edges, round the light switches and plug sockets before getting the roller out.
