So the revised 2012 Defender has been unveiled. It's got a new, Euro 5 2.2-litre diesel engine but does anyone know if this is the same engine as in the Freelander? Or perhaps the Ford Transit? Or maybe it is the old 2.4 Tdci engine with a smaller capacity? Just curious. I can see why they've had to do it, but nowhere does it say where the power plant has come from.

Based on the current 2.4 TDCi (Puma) engine.

It has new injectors and will be fitted with DPF.

Same power\torque and consumption. It's come out due to the new EU5 emission regulations.

Im fairly sure the 2.2 has a dual mass flywheel. This, along with the fact that it is now fitted with a DPF means that I will be keeping hold of my 2.4!

Just wondering, has anyone on here driven one of these yet? If so, any thoughts vs the Puma/td5?

We're considering trying one as a potential pool van but wondered if anyone had any pointers of things to watch for. Apparently the 2.4 is no longer an option if we want new... and there's negligible difference between in price between new and 1 yr old 2.4.

BTW, I understand from my local dealer that:
1) The engine is more closely related to the Jaguar x-type unit, but with uprated seals and single rather than dual mass flywheel
2) Better soundproofing is now in place
3) Speed limiter is raised vs previous models

He's not come up with anything on the negative side though.

Thanks in advance chaps!

The now one is supposed to be smoother to drive and comes with a few options packages,

They aid comfort or off road ability etc.

Try one and see how you like it,
