As it seems to be officially winter today, I need to stock up on logs. Problem is, you cant get a car/van to my house. So I need to carry it all through a narrow path to stack up. So, I'm looking at smaller loads, not a full truck load.

I've seen a poster for a cubic meter of seasoned hardwood for £55, free delivery. Does that seem a good rate? Any idea of the kind of quantity that'd provide?

Last year I was quoted about £100 for a level load or half load. IE, one seemed double the price for the same amount. So I'm lost with prices. Based in Oxfordshire, if it helps.

£55 for a cubic metre doesn't sound too bad. That's still a lot of wood though, so you're going to be making innumberable trips up and down the lane!

I know, but its the smallest 'load' I've seen advertised. The bags just work out at silly prices and last a few days.

Oh, and ignoring the access issues, do you have plenty of stacking space when you get from A to B? If so, why not order a larger load - yes it's more fetching and carrying, but one afternoon of it in one go rather than successive exercises over time...

It gets more complicated that a narrow path.

I live on the high street, the 'entrance' to my land is on the high street. So no where really to get a dump load of logs onto. Then I need to ensure no one loads their boot up when I'm doing runs. I also cant use a wheelbarrow, as its got steps in it.

Plenty of space, probably a 2meter stretch of wall to put them against. Oh, these logs are for 2 houses too, sharing the cost with a neighbour.

Well at least you'll have a second pair of hands to help shift them, or if not that then someone to stand guard!

2m stretch of wall, so 2m2 at best in a single order. Looks like you're going to be dragging them uphill for a looong time.

May be worth looking at a bogie trolley - cheap things to pick up and they should be able to manage steps perfectly well

Yea, 2 sets of hands. I imagine we'll do half a run each, with an other person at the end stacking neatly.

I'm not going to bother with a trolley, it seems that'd be an other meter cubed of wood!

Any idea on pricing?

£55 delivered for a m3 doesn't seem to bad as I said earlier - it'll only get much cheaper if you get lots more!

Price is good if it is seasoned hardwood. The distance isnt the issue when moving TBH. The slow bit is the number of trips (so get a good trolly or barrow), and the stacking at the other end. I got 2m3 last year and it took about 3 hours for me (on my own) to move them from my driveway into my garage about 30 feet away. It felt like bloody ages and ages and ages

That sounds very cheap - are you sure it is all hardwood and properly seasoned? I'm paying about £80/m2 inc delivery oop north.

It wasa poster in a pub. Yet to call. But rather than get prices for 4, I figure I'll take the one who offers a price that is good and arrange it on the same call.

No wonder we're running out of fossil fuel with all you buggers burning all the wood. Let it rot for couple of million years till it goes nice and black and runny...... Think of the Chiwldren!

Sodding new builds, no fireplace here frown

Felled telegraph poles chopped up with a chainsaw work well as firewood in my experience though biggrin

I've been felling, splitting and stacking all year. A good 12hrs at a weekend is enough to generate 3t or so.

Yep, a good price for seasoned hardwood, assuming that it is. I'm in Oxon too, and pay significantly more for barely-seasoned stuff.

Delivered wood (the pile) of Seasoned logs on Saturday. A Trailer full for £150.
Not sure if overpriced or not, but for sure big, heavy, seasoned Hardwood compared to a lot of the st getting delivered at the tail end of the winter.

Blimey that should keep the chimera in fuel for a few months wink
