Are national stadiums an outdate concept?

Given the cost of New Wembley, the FA are too skint to allow matches to wander around the country again.
They aren't an outdated concept but it is always each to their own. Spain manage perfectly well without having one at all (and apparently they cherry pick certain stadiums for particular matches - difficult or vital matches are often played at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan in Seville due to the oppressive atmosphere). However, I can't imagine England not playing big games at Wembley or France not playing at the Stade and I suppose Argentina not playing at El Monumental.
If Wembley had been paid for then it might be a decent idea to have some of the lesser friendlies back on tour again, but that isn't going to happen any time soon.
