Ok, so the Mrs decides that the Megane Cab is no longer to her liking and sets her sights on a 9-3 Convertible.

Last weekend i went and had a look at one, ticked all the right boxes so went away to think about it.

Monday, i give the chap a call, tell him i'll take the car and ask that he has a look at the rear tyres as they look low to me.

Fast forward to today, the garage calls to tell me that indeed the tyres do look low but the car has passed an MOT on them. They will however do me a favour though and sell me a new set of rears at cost (we'll get back to that). Now, personally this bugged me a tad (and told them so). If the tyres are not much more than legal, rather than phoning me to sell me a set, should they fitting some new rubber as a matter of courtesy? It's what i was hinting at when i asked them to check!

I'm buying it at £8.5k, i don't think that sticking some fresh rubber on the back is unreasonable - or am i mistaken in these hard times?

As for the set they'll sell me, their budgets start at over the ton (225/45 17)...Pretty sure i've seen midrange on ebay for less than that.

Apart from that, the bloke seems like a decent chap...His call also gave me a chance to remind them to check the swirl valves on the Tid engine, lets hope they're okay!

Could you not try and agree to go halves on the price?

tbh why not just say listen fit some new tyres on the back or im not interested instead of fannying about and hoping they pick up on your hint. Why would they offer if you've already said you will take the car but just want them to "look" at the rear tyres.

They will more than likely do it in times like these where selling cars isn't easy.

Well, run my own business and I wouldn't be giving away a good few hundred quid if I didn't have to. If the deal depended on it then maybe yes if the figures stacked up. Rather than hint you need to say 'Yes, I'll take the car as long as you replace the rear tyres...' so the vendor knows what is required to complete the sale. If you asked him to check the tyres and he does and informs you that they are legal then he has met your request. He is offering you a set at cost as a matter of courtesy. I cant see how he can be fairer than that. You should have made it clear from the outset is my feeling tongue out

Negotiate :-) it's a buyers Market - ask them to fit new tyres ( not ditch finders ) or suggest the lower price you are willing to pay?

Too many unanswered questions to say, but surely just say you'll buy the car if they put new rubber on and see what happens??

You're correct that you can get mid range tyres fitted for less than that. Check any of the mobile tyre fitter web sites.

I would imagine cost price would be £60-£70.

I think the problem here is as far as the dealer is concerned you agreed to buy the car at a specific price, THEN asked about the tyres.

He's trying to sell him a set of budgets for over £100, there's no way that's cost price for a 225/45/17.

Yeah, shot myself in the foot there!

Still, on the plus side - if i see to it myself i can avoid a set of widowmakers

They're honestly not going to let the deal fall through over the price of a set of tyres, just be straight with them and say you want a decent set of tyres on the car or the deal falls through. In the highly unlikely event that they refuse, take your business to somewhere else. It's a buyer's market, and that's coming from someone in the trade.

Make this simple for them and tell them you will take the car as it stands less the price they stated for the tyres. Put it towards decent ones from camskill or ebay - I would by some part used!

Asking for tyres to be replaced as part of a deal is slippery ground anyway - you just know that if they do agree to it, you'll collect your car with a set of Wanli Ditchfinders on the back.

Agree. I'd still chance my luck being a buyers market, or they could at least meet you halfway with the cost of the tyres.

Point conceded

My trouble is that the Mrs likes it and unlike most this car is spec'ed to death. Hard to say no to her, I'd rather she stuck with the Megane as it won't cost me anything!

I drove one of those and I'm not sure it's the best drivers car (maybe a slight understatement here!!). As long as you (read: she) likes it I guess...

It's had the Hirsch power upgrade (wow!), but compared to the Megane i doubt it can't be worse ( or compared to the Sportage or shedtastic Micra)

Still it's for her, she demands and I supply
