Hi All,

I have now had my car looked at by a specialist regarding earlier reported problems with downchanging to 2 gear and experiencing vibrations through the lever and at its most extreme, unsettling the rear of the car.

Whilst up on a ramp the guy showed me that the drive shaft from the wheels has play in it as it connects to the gearbox/diff. By wabbling it, you can hear its worn and it knocks.

His diagnostic is that it requires Crown Wheel (aka Differential) bearings. The quote is about £500 - £550 and I was wondering whether its worth just getting a used gearbox with LSD as he tell me that it might need more but won't know until its opened up.

Has anyone got any experience of this kind of thing? Or a good supplier to recon boxes?

Any help would be much appreciated
Thanks
Simon

Whereabouts are you based?

I would simply recommend you take it to a good independant and get a second opinion to confirm the diagnosis. As far as used boxes go, you will do well to find one with LSD, and you wont know what condition its in until you fit it. Although fitting a box is not that hard.

I am based in Tonbridge, Kent.

Wonder if there are any suppliers who offer re-con guaranteed gearboxes?

My experience of bearings going is a whine from the box when you are on the power that stops when you back off. Annoying but the box will go on for many miles like that. (not recomended) I may be able to source you a Turbo box that is in good condition.

I had the same problem on my S2 gearbox and it was the pinion bearings, very common problem on this box I'm told. I paid about the same as you've been quoted, but that included some new bearings on the input/output shafts.
Beware of fitting a turbo box as the gear ratios are different and you will end up with a car that accelerates slower! ( 3rd gear on the Turbo is good for over 100mph, only 85 in an S2 )
Also beware of buying a used box, as the problem is reasonabley common, you may well end up buying another with the same problem. Buy from a reputable source, try Porsch-apart or Lodge Sports, they are both good.

The price is about right for pinion bearings.

My view would be to repair your own one, much better the devil you know -- even if some extra work is required in the box when it is inspected.

good luck, tell us how you get on.

(NB Quaife are not far from you in Kent, so you could get an LSD from them to fit to your box but the price is steep £850 ish plus VAT !!!)
