Rust... and Um Rust
Didn't look too bad to me from the photos, but you can never tell from photos - especially ones taken a million miles away like those!!
Great cars though.

Shame - not the only great car that rots away either

True, but I've never seen anything made in my lifetime rot like an 90s E-Class
Yeah, that's sort of true in blighty.....where we lived in Newcastle the Neighbour had an '01 which was rotten.....but when we moved out to the states we picked up a '99 E430 Sport for the missus - and it hasn't got a spot of rust on it...despite it's 158K miles.....and it's been very reliable...goes, handles and stops pretty well too!If it was me I'd have a look at it, check the front wings and the rear arches......it might be a good 'un......I was always interested in them since I got obliterated by a gent in a business suit when I was in my '01 GTV V6 (in 2001) on a back road.......I'd get one in a heartbeat (but probably a W211.....for more pokiness.....)

Cheap compared to an M5 or S6 of similar age.Can decent W210s be saved? Is it worth throwing a ton of Waxoyl at the underbody?
Saw a Merc thread on another forum where they were doing their best to preserve a nice looking E430 estate.

Fantastic engine and whilst the body is prone to worm, not necessarily any more so than alternatives.
Based on a similar epoch C43, I nurture reservations o'er urban ride quality (in the face of Britain's crumbling roads) and the calibre of internal material/assembly quality.
However, based on that, if any of the handling genetics are/were transferred to the experience of this medium sized body, then it may be a forgotten gem with flat turn in and confidence inspiring composure over B road stages, even in comparison to traditional //M fare.
Whilst the C43 requires a fair degree of anvil abuse to really get a crack on, the additional dilithium of the 5.5l puts it firmly into (and slightly above) Alpina B10 V8 territory which is not to be sniffed at.

I've just bought one and the rust issue, on mine anyway, isn't as bad as everyone makes out.
The bolt on panels are the worst, the actual shell isn't too bad.
Mine has 1 rotten front wing, a tiny bit of rust on 1 wheel arch, but it is no worse than BMWs or VWs of a similar age.
I took it for its MOT last week and underneath is very good, much better than similar age Mk3 golfs that have massive issues on the floor.
Sills are excellent, only advisories were the brake pipes.
Performance wise it is brilliant, a good slug of torque making it a bit quicker than my 3.8 M5 on motorway type roads and they can be hustled surprisingly well for a big car.

Be warned, those little bubbles of rus will spread. My dad's old W210 was bought with slight rust 3 years ago and by this time last year the wings were cornflakes and the side body panel was starting to rot. We got rid of it this year, by which point the roof, tailgate and bonnet were rusting beneath the paint. The bolt on panels are the worst, the actual shell isn't too bad.
