I seem to be besieged by flies! Just your common housefly/bluebottle type thing but soooooo many!
Before leaving for work this morning I gave a very long spray of fly killer in the kitchen and living room and closed the doors. When I came home tonight I found 18 dead flies on the floor. Within an hour of getting in I despatched another 4 live ones!
Fearing the worst I've turned out all of the cupboards, moved the fridge and tumble drier out of their positions and even taken all the plinths out of the kitchen units. I've also checked the waste bin thoroughly. There is not a single trace??!! No great swarm of flies waiting to emerge, no maggots and no pupa cases, full or empty!
So where could they be coming from and how can I discourage them? I leave no windows open during the day, just the (very thin) vents in the window frames.
The next step, when I get home tomorrow is to see if any of the neighbours have rotting food in their bins, compost heaps or are keeping chickens etc.

Am I missing something?

No, Tow Vehicle rqrd is not buried under the floorboards!

If you are unlucky they are Cluster Flies. They hibernate in attics, eave spaces etc. An absolute bd to get rid of and keep coming back year after year.

I've been surprised by the lack of flies this summer - rarely see one.

Do you have a chimney?

We had just this a month or so ago, turned out that they were coming from the chimney (unused). Heard some rustling in there a month before that - guessing a bird fell in and died.

Taped up the fireplace and used plenty of flyspray. Tapping on cardboard in the fireplace as the flies tried to escape stopped after a few days although there was a resurgence a week or two later...

Funnily enough I am waiting in now for the chimney sweep to come and get rid eek

No chimney, there is a badly cut hole through the wall for the tumble drier vent though! scratchchin I'll investigate that!

Turned out we had a big fat dead pigeon (and a couple of hundred dead flies) in the chimney - reckoned it hadn't been cleaned for 20 years!

Fat chance, got one and even with the rest of the lights off it has never been that good.

I wouldn't mind but it is as big as the one in our local chippy and not cheap either!

Problem seems to have calmed down a bit now. I sprayed all around the skirting boards, windows and outside vents with fly spray. I've also ordered a heavy duty, 30 watt fly zapper! smile

I had a problem with bluebottle flies in the kitchen at my old flat. In the end I called in an odd job man who found the problem was coming from a chimney behind my kitchen sink cupboard which I didn`t even know was once a chimney. He removed the back of the sink cupboard and found a de-composed pigeon. As he removed it he told me part of it`s head came away - yuk!

Get yourself a small African child. From what I've seen on the adverts, they are much better than those sticky strips you can buy from B&Q for catching flies.

Well, regular applications of fly-spray plus citronella candles and incense seem to have stopped them, for now!
I'm keeping up a regular vigil of checking everywhere that they may come in, and I've also got the 'Zapper' coming so, hopefully, I'll no longer be the Lord of the flies! smile

Better than a live pigeon, in my opinion

Flies don't last long in the Saleen house, we have Mrs Saleen's 2 cats to thank for that! smile
