Good Afternoon all.

Im making a trip over to the mainland in late Sept. Im staying with my God Parents in Berkhamsted. My Girlfriend is flying over for the weekend in to Gatwick airport. Ive said ill go pick her up from Gatwick. But now I think about it im sure ive read on here and other places that the M25 is a complete joke on Friday evenings.

Would it be quicker for my girlfriend to get a train up to St Albans, then I pick her up from there?

Cheers

Your missus can get from Gatwick airport to St Albans with no changes on First Capital Connect in 1hr13m. There is no way you'll drive it in that (plus you've then got to drive the reverse journey). With a very clear run you might find it's about the same journey time - guess how likely a clear run on a Friday night is wink

Ok sounds like it might be quicker to get a train.

On the question of how clear it will be on a Friday, im guessing its a mass evacuation of London on Friday evenings?

Friday night is pretty horrible to be honest. Bit of a lottery though - sometimes I have been able to work out that I could have walked the 37 or so miles home faster because of the M25 - sometimes it runs. Ish.

Traffic report is quite hit and miss and you can usually add at least one junction to wherever it claims the que starts from.

Put it this way... you'll hit the junctions for the M1, M40, M4, M3 and M23 before you get to Gatwick.

Yes and on Sunday evenings they all return.

It is one of the most busy roads in Europe. Avoid.

Ok well new plan. Im now staying in Bournemouth over night as my sister doesn't get her keys to her new house share until Friday morning. I will be spending the day helping her move in.

So now it would be rude to not pick the girlfriend up from Gatwick (Apparently).

My question to you fine folks is which route will be quicker.

http://g.co/maps/v8vxu

Which involves driving on the M25 for a few miles South.

Or

http://g.co/maps/zr9f3

Do I complete a flanking manouver on Gatwick, which would mean I only have to drive North bound on the M25 when heading up to my Godparents after girlfriend extraction from the airport.

I will be driving up to Gatwick for about 19:30 on the Friday.

Sorry for all the questions. All my other driving experiences are on mainland Europe or blitzing it around the UK at night.

It depends if someone has wiped out on the M27/M3/M25 wink

Toptip - get TomTom with HD traffic, and let it decide for you based on current road conditions...

st the bed I spent a total of 5hrs in traffic jams on the M25 & M23 this weekend. Never again. She can get the Gatwick express next time.

The missus even had the cheek to say "im going to miss my flight." That was after 30mins traveling at 15mph. F**k yoooouuuu, ive got to sit in this sh*t on the way back and ill prob miss my dinner.

We did tell you ;->

Does the statement

"The M25 is one of the most congested roads in Europe"

mean more to you now than before ?
